Girl math... again

This Instagram Reel features a man describing the benefits of a ME Bank product. The caption includes "move over girl math, this is #goodmath".

A complainant was concerned about the implication that girls aren't good at math and the ad was discriminatory.

Consistent with a previous decision, the Community Panel found that despite the attempt at social media relevance, the ad does promote a negative stereotype that women are not good at maths.

The ad breached Section 2.1 (Discrimination or vilification) of the Code of Ethics.

Upheld - AANA Code of Ethics (Discrimination or vilification)

Still not pregnant

This radio ad featured a voiceover repeatedly stating, "you're still not pregnant".

Complainants raised concerns about the ad being triggering and bullying people who are trying to fall pregnant but experience fertility issues.

The Community Panel considered that this was a highly sensitive topic, and the ad’s repeated use of the distressing phrase “you’re still not pregnant” was not treating the topic with the sensitivity that would be expected by the community.

The ad breached Section 2.6 (Health and safety) of the Code of Ethics.

Shot down

This TV ad promoting a roofing service featured two men hunting in the bush while chatting. They spot a cockatoo, and one of the men shoots at it.

The Community Panel acknowledged that while the ad was a cartoon, and no actual birds were harmed in the production of the ad, many people would still consider the depiction of shooting protected species to be violent and not justifiable in the context of promoting roofing products.

The ad breached Section 2.3 (Violence) of the Code of Ethics.

Upheld - AANA Code of Ethics (Violence)
