Clarifier #4 repairs on schedule

Our team has been working hard on essential repairs to two of the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant’s four clarifiers. Clarifier #3 has been back in service for almost two weeks following leak fixes, and repairs to Clarifier #4 are now also nearing completion. This work is expected to be complete by this Friday 28 March.

Impacts on odour

The reduction of our temporary activated sludge plant to 50% capacity to enable these works is resulting in some odour. This is due to the increased load to the oxidation ponds. So far, the increase in odour isn't significant and seems to be localised to the area around the ponds/plant and along Cuthberts Road.

As we head into autumn and temperatures cool down, the biology of the ponds also changes. This could also be contributing to the increase in odour coming from the ponds.

Once the clarifier repairs are finished we can return the temporary activated sludge plant to 100% capacity which will reduce the load to the ponds and resulting odour.

We continue to monitor plant operations closely during this time and tweak our operations where we can to reduce odour and keep the plant operating smoothly.
