Spotlight On Our People

Marlini Simoes

Marlini Simoes

Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow, Mechanical and Civil Engineering

I finished my PhD in Physics at the Cavendish Laboratory of the University of Cambridge, UK, and joined Caltech as a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow this year. During my PhD, I developed new additively manufactured smart cellular material structures to be used as reusable energy absorbers for vehicle landing impacts and to offer self-healing protection against space debris impact – this research was awarded a grant from the European Space Agency. My PhD thesis led me to be the winner of the UK Doctoral Researcher Awards 2022 in Engineering. My research aims at developing a new generation of material-structures that can provide hitherto mechanical behavior by expanding the frontiers of manufacturing engineering for space applications and beyond. To achieve this, I combine computational modeling, a large range of material characterization techniques and mechanical testing, as well as additive manufacturing technologies. Outside of research, I go jogging and I do race walking training.

Graduate Student, Andrew and Peggy Cherng Dept. of Medical Engineering

I am a third-year PhD student in Medical Engineering, and I am highly motivated to develop medical devices for global health. Working with Professor Rustem F. Ismagilov [Ethel Wilson Bowles and Robert Bowles Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering], I have invented an interactive device that provides on-the-job training and quality-control systems for diagnostic handling procedures, which are not feasible in resource-poor regions where skilled personnel are limited. Beyond this device, I want to continue to investigate this kind of translational research with educational aspects, which could lead to saving people's lives. In my free time, I enjoy watching movies, discovering hidden gem restaurants & ice cream, and walking with my friends and family.

We'd like to feature you!

DOE Voucher Program Submission - Clean Energy Sector

DOE is opening a submission window: for U.S. entrepreneurs, businesses, technology developers, and local governments to apply to receive vouchers for specific commercialization services in the clean energy sector. If your organization needs commercialization support or help with technology adoption or permitting, this program is for you. Apply for the Voucher Program to receive support to advance demonstration and commercialization of innovative energy technologies.  You can receive free services—from pre-approved providers in the form of vouchers that can be used to access test-bed performance validation capabilities, industry certification testing, technical and business maturation services, siting/permitting support, and other commercialization assistance. For more details on the five voucher opportunities, read here. Submissions are due November 16, 2023.

2024 KISS Study Programs Call

The Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) is soliciting concepts for Study Programs to be carried out during the 2024 calendar year. Concepts are solicited in the areas of space engineering, planetary science, remote sensing and earth system science, astrobiology, observational astronomy and physics from space. Proposal Concepts Due (Required; 2-pages): November 3, 2023. Proposals Due (5-pages+appendices): December 20, 2023. Learn more.

RSI Ideation Grants - Call for Proposals
