Christmas imports

Please ensure you apply well in advance if you are importing explosives, certain children's art supplies, or ozone depleting substances, over the Christmas holiday period.

Make sure you have submitted a complete application by 6 December.

Next steps on fumigant

A hearing is due to reconvene before Christmas on the application to introduce ethanedinitrile (EDN), an alternative for the pre-shipment fumigation of export logs.

Once the decision-making committee has defined the scope of the virtual hearing, the EPA will publish a direction and minute with this information. We will also contact the parties already involved in this process to ask whether they wish to be heard.

Keep an eye on the EDN webpage for updates

Reminder: import certificate required for fireworks

Image of fireworks

Before you can sell fireworks, you'll need an import certificate from the EPA and testing by a fireworks certifier.

Once we have all the information we need, import certificates are normally processed in ten working days. At busy times, such as in preparation for Guy Fawkes, this timeframe may be longer.

Fireworks can only be sold 2-5 November, and sparklers can only be sold as part of a fireworks package.

Help shape NZ's emissions reduction plan

The Ministry for the Environment is currently consulting on a plan to set the direction for climate action over the next 15 years. This includes proposals to reduce emissions from fluorinated gases, focusing on hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). If you import or export refrigerants, you may be interested in these specific proposals – submissions are due by 24 November.
