The challenges of a school
Knower vs learner or can you be both.
To get the balance right in a school setting is a major challenge. Knowledge, or the ability to produce desired results through action is essential for being successful in this world. So, doesn’t being a knower enhance, rather than hinder, success? The difficulty comes because knowers generally are not willing to admit “I don’t know” and be influenced. Alternatively, to being a knower is to be a “learner.” Learners effectively use their knowledge and expertise not by applying standard solutions by inquiring further. They see their understanding as only a part of the whole realm of insight into a problem and not as the single, silver-bullet answer. Learners are willing to be influenced and to improve their repertoire of
actions. Our change is guiding our children to seek knowledge without being knowers. Once you know you are right learning ceases. For a knower the knowing is so central to who they are that they sometimes act as if they know something even when they don’t. We are constantly challenging ourselves as a staff to continue to learn and to support our children to have open minds. The pace of change in society today, someone who is unwilling to open themselves to learning will quickly become ineffective. There are many strategies that we use in our school to help us, and the children be grounded and have a balance of knowing and learning. The five disciplines of learning provide a framework for overcoming the pitfalls of being knower and
for developing skills to be successful in the 21st century. Helping our children to be in the Learners “learner stance”. It starts with goal setting and clearly stated learning intentions. (1) They admit they are not currently achieving desired results – they want something more or better; (2) They take responsibility for addressing the current situation; and (3) They admit that what they are presently doing is not producing the desired results. (Learners often go deeper and make two more decisions:) (4) They admit that, to achieve the desire results, they must go beyond the repertoire of actions they can reliably use; and (5) They are willing to be influenced. These five decisions motivate learners to seek new knowledge.
Board ElectionsI want to congratulate Lily Chirathamjaree for being elected on to the Board. Lily has a wealth of experience in a range of areas and will be a positive addition to the Board. I want to thank all the candidates who stood for elections to the Board. They are all outstanding people who would make a great contribution to the school and would be good members when future vacancies arise, and I thank them again for nominating.
Interschool Athletics CarnivalCoolbinia was represented by a team of enthusiastic and talented athletes who competed with determination and brought great pride to our school. Our students showed a strong willingness to participate in all events and fully embraced the team spirit we value at Coolbinia PS. Even more impressive were the acts of sportsmanship displayed by all students throughout the competition. They are to be commended for their outstanding efforts, particularly given that we were competing against much larger schools.
Sibling Showdown in the Chess Championship! The annual school Chess Championship reached an electrifying finale this week with a thrilling face-off between siblings Sienna and Mitch. The atmosphere in the hall was charged with excitement as over 100 students gathered to watch the intense battle unfold on the chessboard. Move by move, the tension grew as both players displayed impressive strategy and composure. Sienna’s sharp tactics kept everyone on edge, while Mitch’s calm and calculated play proved decisive in the end. After a nail-biting final few minutes, Mitch
emerged victorious, claiming the championship title, but not without earning immense respect for his sister’s incredible performance. The crowd erupted in cheers as the siblings shook hands, embodying the true spirit of sportsmanship. It was a match to remember, one that will be talked about for years to come!
Spooky SpokesOn Friday October 31st, over 25 students celebrated WA Bike Month with their entry to our 'Spooky Spokes' competition. Congratulations to Elizabeth from Room 7, and Emily, Reeva, Carla and Aurora from Room 3 for their amazing creations. They all demonstrated amazing creativity, putting in a huge effort to produce an extremely spooky effect!
Year 4 Room 10 - Art and Design
Alex: Medieval Castle
We did this for architecture in art. We were shown different styles of architecture and we picked a building of that style to draw.
Chloe & Emilia: Magnificent house
We had to draw a front, side, back and interior blueprint drawing of a house so we could begin making our pop stick house in art.
Lucia: Titanic
We had to draw the interior, front, side and downward views of the titanic. This helped us with drawing and designing our own boat that we are making to see if it floats.
Mitch, Elliot: Optical Illusions.
We had to draw a circle and then draw insides darker so it looked like it was sticking out. We then chose two colours for a pattern to colour it in so it fooled the eyes.
Elliot: Optical Illusion.
We had to draw stairs and then draw a backing for the stairs. We then shaded the front of the stairs so it looked like it was stairs. We wrote A and B on the front and back of the stairs which would allow us to flip the page upwards and downwards to look the same.
Gabriella: Edward Tulane.
We had 35 minutes to draw the cover of Edward Tulane. We had read the book and Mr D gave us a challenge. We then had to draw the cover in 10 minutes and then 1 minute. It was quite fun!
Emilia: Life Cycles.
In science we drew a lifecycle of a bird of our choice and I chose a Kookaburra. It’s stages are an egg, hatchling, nestling, fledgling, juvenile and adult.
Coolbinia Art Club runs in Weeks 3, 6 & 9 each term on Friday lunch! It’s open to Years 1–6 and led by our Year 6 Art Leaders with support from the Year 4 Helpers. This week, students designed their own pop-stick characters, from spooky pumpkins and mummies to Minions and adorable puppies! 👻🎃🐶 With paint pens, googly eyes, and plenty of imagination, our young artists brought their creations to life! ✨
