Partners in Learning: Cultivating Community and Leadership at Crofton House

At CHS, partnerships help students put their learning into action and inspire them to make a difference. Last month, with support from our partners in learning at Backpack Buddies and the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, students across the Junior and Senior Schools explored how their own ideas and initiatives can make an impact in the community. From the bright neon accessories to the dazzling illuminated dance floor, the entire space buzzed with energy. A heartfelt thank you goes out to event chairs Carmen Hou, Rachel Leihl, and Shelley Law, along with the many dedicated parent volunteers, CHS staff, the Facilities Department, and SAGE Dining. RSVP for Grandparents’ Day (and Volunteers Still Needed!)

A friendly reminder that Grandparents and Significant Elders of students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3 are invited to attend Grandparents' Day on Friday, April 24, from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. Parents are asked to RSVP online by Thursday, April 9.

Volunteers needed! The PA is looking for additional JK-Grade 3 parents to help set up for Grandparents’ Day on Thursday, April 23 and Friday, April 24. Please sign up here if you’re able to lend a hand (parents are welcome to sign up for multiple spots). Thank you!

CHS Community Book Club

Our next book club meeting will be held in the Nocente Family Fireplace Lounge on Wednesday, April 15, from 9:30 to 10:30 am. We’ll be discussing Ru by Kim Thúy — or, if you prefer, another of her works. First published in 2009, Ru traces Thúy’s family’s journey from Vietnam to Québec, exploring themes of migration, identity, and cultural adaptation. The novel’s brief, lyrical style has earned it multiple literary awards. (Fun fact: “ru” means “small stream” in French and “cradle” or “to rock” in Vietnamese.) A film adaptation of Ru was released in 2023.

Coffee, tea, and light snacks will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there!

Highlighting Our Volunteers: Building Community, One Uniform at a Time

Crofton House’s Used Uniform Sale has become a cornerstone of the school community, thanks in large part to the vision and dedication of Grade 12 parent Ai-Lin Tiah. What began as a simple idea sparked by frustration over unused, barely worn uniforms has grown into a thriving, sustainable initiative that supports many CHS families. Read more.

Don’t miss out on the Spring Used Uniform Sale on Wednesday, April 22, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the Heritage Dining Room, Old Residence. We are still accepting donations of clean, gently-used uniform pieces with the current school logo to donation bins located at the Junior and Senior School entrances, and the Receiving Entrance on Balaclava Street.

Want to join in the fun and volunteer for the Used Uniform Sales? Please fill out the PA Volunteer’s Expression of Interest Form and indicate “Used Uniform Sale” in the comments section.
