![]() Move Out EditionThe Office of Sustainability is here to help you prep for move out and maximize the number of items diverted from the dumpster and donated instead! Move Out PrepThe end of the school year is just around the corner. Here are a few tips on how to best prepare for move-out week and what resources will be available.1. Start packing sooner rather than later.Students are required to move out within 24 hours of their last final or by Saturday, May 18th at 1 pm--whichever comes sooner--so getting a head start on packing can eliminate a lot of unnecessary stress during finals week. If you make a trip home prior to your move out date, it is a good idea to take a few items or pieces of furniture that you won't need for the rest of the year to lighten the load on move out day.
2. Make sure you are up to date and informed about your residence’s move out procedures.Attend a community meeting to hear important move out information, confirm your finals schedule, and sign up for a checkout date before May 6th, to avoid a $75 improper check-out fine. If you need to stay later than May 18th at 12pm, you must email your building manager by Friday, May 3rd to be granted permission. Contact your Resident Advisor or a Residence Life representative if you have any questions about move out procedures. 3. Make a move out plan.Decide how you will be moving your belongings—will you be transporting them by car, shipping them, or storing them over the summer? Communicate move out plans with roommates and family to ensure everything goes smoothly and get any help you might need.
4. Set Goals. The task of packing up your dorm becomes much more manageable when scaled down and sorted into achievable goals. For example, in the days leading up to your check out date, set a goal to pack up your kitchen ware, and the next day focus on packing up and sorting through your clothes. Separating these tasks over a stretch of time can make the process seem much less daunting. Ditch the Dumpster & Donate!Help the Office of Sustainability and Chapman divert excess waste from the landfill!Have items that you want to get rid of but are still in good condition? Donate them at one of our donation stations! If you have items or clothing that you don't plan on taking home with you, consider donating them. An unsuspecting target-- slippers supplied by hotels-- are the next single-use item caught in the cross hairs of sustainability activists. The slippers themselves are usually made from plastic and fabric, found in hotel closets and disposed of after use. Hotel and resort housekeepers are advising managers to ditch the slippers, calling them low hanging fruit in the fight against single use plastics. However, this issue is more complex than replacing plastic straws with paper, as slippers have become a sign of luxury that cater to standards of comfort across cultures.
Rasmus Monk, owner of Alchemist-- ranked 5th on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list-- has just open Spora, a lab dedicated to creating the sustainable protein of the future. He plans to do this by upcycling food waste that is normally discarded in the preparation process. Currently, 40% of the food produced in the United States goes uneaten or unsold. For this reason, traditional food waste has become this biggest target in terms of creating a more sustainable food sector. Read about Spora's efforts at creating chocolate out of coffee grounds and tacos out of canola oil byproduct.
In the aftermath of Pakistan's devastating floods, Yasmeen Lari, a renowned architect, launched the Heritage Foundation of Pakistan (HFP), a pioneering program that revolutionizes post-disaster reconstruction efforts through sustainable architecture. Where architectural innovation and environmental consciousness blend, bamboo, a versatile and renewable resource, forms the foundation of resilient housing solutions. Traditional building materials like cement and steel are replaces with mud, mixed with a touch of lime, which not only fortifies the structure but also sequesters a small amount of carbon from the atmosphere.
