Scotch College eNewsletter – Tue 26 Aug 2025

Our fortnightly news and a key resource for current families.

From the Headmaster

Dear Scotch Community,

The last couple of weeks have seen a wide range of co-curricular activities across Junior, Middle and Senior School. As I mentioned in my last Thistle, the College enjoyed a wonderful series of Book Week celebrations. I would like to thank our library staff for their creativity and effort in highlighting the importance of reading for boys of all ages. It was especially enjoyable to take part in the Junior School Book Week pantomime.

Last week also marked the conclusion of the winter PSA sporting fixtures. Congratulations to Mr Gault, our Head of Sport, and to all the staff and coaches who dedicate so much time and energy to ensuring our boys can participate in their chosen sport across every grade and level of competition.

My thanks also go to Mr Scott Loveday and the Music Department for delivering two outstanding soirees, one for Junior and Middle School boys, and another for the Senior School. Both showcased the extraordinary breadth of musical and creative talent at the College. Schools without such opportunities miss out on something truly special.

I would also like to acknowledge the staff who continue to support our boys in debating. Over the past term, our students have competed at a very high level. Last week I was privileged to attend the Year 7 and Year 12 WADL semi-finals. While our teams did not progress, the quality of their arguments and the complexity of the topics demonstrated how confidently they can perform in public speaking.

Finally, I am pleased to share that staff from Boarding, Admissions and the Old Scotch Collegians office will be attending the Dowerin Machinery Field Days on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 August. I warmly invite you to say hello, as we always look forward to connecting with our regional families and Old Boys at these events.

Great schools rightly place strong emphasis on academic achievement, but the past fortnight has once again reinforced the immense value of a rich co-curricular program in shaping a well-rounded education.

Have a great fortnight!

Dr Alec O'Connell
Headmaster
