Free societies require the uninhibited flow of information and speech regardless of how controversial it may be. Universities exist to create knowledge through open and constructive debate of ideas while media exists to disseminate information responsibly and in balanced fashion—-both are vital to our democracy. Through the Center for Free Expression and Media Integrity, we will advance and promote the ideals of free speech and balanced media while at the same time monitor and challenge media bias and assaults on free speech. Democracy depends on an informed public. Education without free expression is not educating the public responsibly. The School of Communication at Chapman University intends to be a leader in providing students and business leaders information, research, and teaching in these important areas that are central to our organizations, academic freedom, and our democracy. Our first projects
under the new center will be to establish a “Great Debates Series” and student run organizations focusing on important related blogs, stories, discussions, debates and town halls. I will serve as Founding Executive Director of the center along with Brian Calle as Executive Director and Michael Ross as Director of Operations. ![]() Dr. Lisa Sparks ![]() ![]() Dr. Michelle Miller-Day Receives Health Communication AwardDr. Michelle Miller-Day won the 2019 Charles Atkin Outstanding Translational Health Communication Scholar Award.
