Newsletter December 2021 No images? Click here Message from the Principal It was with trepidation that I watched face-to-face activities recommence at the Guild this term; and, I am delighted that my fears were unfounded. There has always been a wonderful sense of community at the Guild and everyone has been supportive of each other and the charity to enable our curriculum to be delivered. Social inclusion is the essence of the charity’s purpose and I have seen so much happiness on everyone’s faces this term. I would to thank everyone for being accepting and tolerant of the additional rules we endured this term. Looking forward to next term I am delighted to write that adults with learning disabilities will commence work placements at our community café soon. The menu will expand and there will be a return to crockery when it feels safe to do so. Sadly, some prices of food and drink at the café will increase slightly next term to cover the increased cost of supplies. You are welcome to come and use the café at any time with your friends. You don’t have to be attending an activity to visit the Guild’s community café. It is now in mid-winter and this means that Covid-19, flu, colds and other winter ailments are more prevalent. To limit the risk of infections there are more restrictions governing the activities; and the charity is making every effort to comply with all guidance and implement best practice. The Guild is trying to remain as “normal” as possible whilst keeping everyone as Covid-safe as possible. Therefore, please do not attend any activities if you are suffering from cold or flu type symptoms (and that includes sniffles!) A short reminder of our expectations when attending Guild activities, please: · use the hand sanitiser when you arrive and before you leave · don’t share equipment unless absolutely necessary · wear a face mask in the communal areas if you can · wear a face mask during activities if requested to · do not attend any activities if you are suffering from cold or flu type symptoms · leave your room as clean and tidy as possible after use Many thanks to everyone for making the Guild a success this term, I wish you all a happy Christmas and relaxing festive break with your friends and family. I look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Best wishes, Paula
Co-op Community Fund! Please choose our Charity as your cause, we'd really appreciate it. Our Cause: We would like to run a series of courses for adults to gain a qualification in youth mental health first aid. This course is specifically designed for supporting children 8 years and over. Children and young people's mental wellbeing is a community initiative. We would provide accredited mental health and wellbeing courses to provide knowledge, support and prevent poor mental health developing. We would provide sustainable resources for participants to become wellbeing champions in their local areas. Two local charities working together in partnership. The Guild is proud to support tenants from the Rossendale Trust on their WorkTaste scheme. Starting from January we will be providing work placements in our Community Café for volunteer staff. The Rossendale Trust provides Supported Living care to adults with learning and physical disabilities enabling tenants to make real choices in their lives, develop in confidence and enjoy increasing independence. We're excited to be part of such a wonderfully positive scheme.
BARE NECESSITIES TOILETRY BANK – A busy year… 2021 has proven to be a busy year and despite the challenges of Covid has seen us extend our reach from 20 to 33 charities across five sectors; women, food banks, youth/schools & colleges, mother& baby and street homeless. 2021 will be engraved on all our memories for a variety of reasons but for us it was a momentous year as we successfully became a registered charity in February. Such a far cry from our humble origins with one black plastic dustbin hosted by the Guild when we supported just three charities! We will be forever grateful for the support of all at the Guild for having faith in us in those early days back in Spring 2018 and for sharing our vision to help eradicate hygiene poverty in our local communities. In March this year we launched our brand-new look donation bins. If you have a business which could host one for a short time please get in-touch. To date, (almost the end of November), we have made over 140 separate deliveries to our charities, for which we rely on a band of 15 trusty volunteers. We have made up almost 600 essential toiletry tote bags which make an immediate and lasting impact to the recipients and 1658 of our smaller packs. These included almost 1,000 of our dental hygiene kits part of our ‘Give a Smile’ initiative. These provide three months’ supply of dental hygiene essentials. In poorer household’s toothbrush sharing and brushing without toothpaste is not uncommon. These kits reached over 3,000 families and individuals and we plan to repeat ‘Give a Smile’ in 2022. Logo courtesy of 1st Wilmslow Guides as part of their centenary celebrations. It’s only with your help, through giving quality, unused toiletries, unwanted gift sets and hotel minis that we are able to continue our work. In the coming weeks we are focusing on providing toiletry packs which will be used for Xmas gifts by many of our charities. These range from teen survival bags stuffed will all the important stuff and maybe some Lynx body spray to women’s pamper packs for the survivors of domestic violence, our five days of dignity packs for those unfortunate enough to be on the streets this winter and much in between. For more information on who we help, how we work or to offer support please visit our website, www.bntoiletrybank.org With our thanks and all good wishes for Christmas. Avoiding Online Shopping Scams this Christmas The Age UK Cheshire East Scams Awareness Team are sharing advice for spotting and avoiding online shopping scams this Christmas. Shopping online gives us a wide choice of goods and can save us time. While most buyers and sellers are genuine, fraudsters use online shopping for scams because they can hide their identity, and target many victims at the same time. According to Action Fraud, online shopping fraud cost shoppers £15.4 million over the Christmas period last year, with over 28,000 people being scammed. Online shopping scams come in many forms - on websites, social media or through emails and texts. All are designed to steal your money, bank details or personal information. If you would like more information about how to spot, avoid and report all types of scams, why not come along to one of the scams awareness events at the Guild for Lifelong Learning next year.
