    SurPASS Tip of the Month

**Major Changes to NIH Biosketch – effective May 25, 2025**

NIH is adopting Common Forms for the Biographical Sketch (Biosketch) and Current and Pending (Other) Support to be used with all application and Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs) by May 25, 2025.

NIH will require the use of Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae (SciENcv) to complete Common Forms (i.e., Biographical Sketch, Current and Pending (Other) Support) and the NIH Biographical Sketch Supplement to produce digitally certified PDF(s) for use in application submission.

NIH will also require all Senior/Key Personnel to enter their ORCID ID into SciENcv in the Persistent Identifier (PID) section of the Common Forms. NIH will require all Senior/Key Personnel to link their ORCID ID to their eRA Commons Personal Profile. For information on linking an ORCID ID to the eRA Commons Personal Profile see the ORCID ID topic in the eRA Commons online help.

Starting May 25, 2025, NIH will no longer accept the current NIH Biosketch or NIH Other Support documents.

**Please reach out to Lynn Cummings, Grants Operations Coordinator, if you would like to get a head start before your next application to convert your Biosketch to the Common Forms!**

Clinical Research Tip of the Month

    Case Reports and Case Series

Q: What constitutes a “case report”?

A case report for IRB purposes is a retrospective analysis of 1, 2, or 3 clinical cases. If more than three cases are involved, then it is considered a case series that constitutes research per IRB policy.

Case series of 3 or less does not require IRB review, however, HIPAA authorization must be obtained from the patients.  If this is not possible, all PHI must be removed.

Q: Do faculty who are preparing a case report as an article for submission to a journal need to obtain IRB approval prior to preparation?

No. A case report is a medical/educational activity that does not meet the DHHS definition of “research.” Therefore, the activity does not have to be reviewed by MCW IRB.

Q: Can I request that the IRB make a formal determination that my case report is not research?

In certain cases, journals may require a formal determination from the IRB that a case report does not constitute research. If official IRB determination is needed, the faculty member should submit an application to the IRB via eBridge, marking the project category (Question 3.1) as not human subject research (NHSR) in the PRO smartform.
