Toddlers who like fossils tend to really like fossils. But even those who are lukewarm on the subject would probably get a kick out of seeing them excavated. The Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits is making that happen. As part of the just-opened Excavator Tour, tots can watch paleontologists in action at the long-closed Observation Pit, an excavated site containing the bones of saber-toothed cats, ground sloths, and dire wolves; the tour also includes a viewing of outdoor dig site Pit 91, a stop at the Fossil Lab, and a walk around the Lake Pit, home of the iconic mammoths and mastodons that are visible from outside the park.

Timed tickets are required, but tours are free with general admission to the museum ($12 for adults; $5 for kids 3–12; free for children 2 and under). The museum is open daily from 9:30am to 5pm and Pit 91 is open from 10am to 4pm with excavators inside the pit Wednesday through Sunday.
