Brainy Breakfast Ideas

Do you provide breakfast options at your OSHC?Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day because it breaks the overnight fasting period and provides essential nutrients to keep kids’ energy levels up throughout the day. Skipping breakfast reduces children’s ability to think clearly and focus well.

A nutritious breakfast does not have to take a long time to prepare or eat. Click on the button below for some nutritious ideas to add to your breakfast menu!

Reducing Mealtime Food Waste

Children's preferences and mealtime environments can have a big impact on food waste! Some key strategies to help reduce mealtime food waste include:

  • Make sure children know they are allowed to come back for second helpings, and don't have to overfill their plate.

  • Educators can role model positive eating through joining in the mealtime, talking about trying new foods, and encouraging positive language when talking about food.

  • Offer some 'family style' meals where children are able to select foods from the middle of the table. This also promotes independence, development of motor skills, and intuitive eating skills.

Ingredient Substitution Tool

This tool from the All About Allergens Resource Hub provides a list of alternative ingredients that can be substituted for allergen containing ingredients. It includes substitution suggestions for wheat/ gluten, peanut, tree nut, eggs, cow's milk, soy, fish, crustacean, mollusc, sesame, and lupin.

You can download this resource as a word document and add your own ingredient substitutions to the list. This is a great resource to keep on the wall of your kitchen as a quick reference guide.
