England’s decision to lift the last COVID restrictions suggests the pandemic is over. But the clue’s in the phrase – “living with COVID”. It’s here, with us, forever. We’ll never be without it again.
Coexisting with the virus requires changes. Better surveillance worldwide to see when and where new outbreaks are cropping up. Vaccines for everyone globally. More funding for health systems. And emergency plans for if the virus starts getting out of hand. Truly, we aren’t ready to live with COVID. But if we take the right steps, we could be.

These areas have been cut off from Ukraine for years, with the population, jobs and education all dwindling, as these on-the-ground interviews reveal. It seems likely a Russian invasion will only further these regions’ declines.
