Newsletter 7 - May 19, 2023

From the Principal

Next Saturday is the start of National Reconciliation Week, recognised as a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Subiaco Primary School is committed to reconciliation and we have created a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) through the Narragunnawali platform. A RAP is a formal statement of commitment to reconciliation and outlines the school’s vision and actions that it will take towards reconciliation.

The RAP drives reconciliation in education by building relationships, respect and opportunities in the classroom, around the school and with the community. The RAP includes a range of actions that the school is making towards reconciliation. It is a working document, with a time frame assigned to each action.
This plan is endorsed by the School Board, is driven by the RAP working group, and is carried out by the staff, students and community of SPS.

P&C Day
Today, Friday 19 May, is P&C Day 2023 which acknowledges the work of Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) Day here in Western Australia. It is very fitting that P&C Day falls within National Volunteer Week (15 - 21 May 2023) as volunteers are such an important part of making a difference to our school.

P&C members received a Thank you card from our students and a small gift. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to each P&C member and acknowledge the contribution you all make to our school.

School Chaplain
School chaplains are qualified youth workers who support our students and our school community. We are very pleased that Ms Alessia Princi has joined the Subiaco Primary School team.  Alessia will be working closely with teachers and students supporting and coordinating many of our Health and Well Being approaches and programs including Bounce Back, Mindfulness, and Growth Mindset.

Running Club
The crisp Autumn mornings have been perfect for our running club before school. The numbers have been impressive with Year 1-3 and Year 4-6 taking part. Big thanks to Mr Clancy and Mr Egan, as well as the wonderful parent who organise and help with these mornings.

What Is the Purpose of Guided Reading?
A focus in our Business Plan is Guided reading. Guided reading provides differentiated teaching that supports students in developing reading proficiency. The teacher uses a framework that allows for incorporating research-based approaches into a coordinated program of work.

For the student, the guided reading lesson means reading, responding and writing about an interesting and engaging variety of fiction and nonfiction texts. For the teacher, guided reading affords the opportunity for careful text selection and intentional and intensive teaching of strategies to develop proficient reading.

Guided reading allows teachers to tailor reading instruction to meet the needs of the individuals within classroom by taking into consideration the different learning styles and abilities that are present. The ultimate goal is to create independent readers who apply a variety of known strategies to read and understand an unknown text. Reading skills are a necessity, and establish the motivation and engagement to learn. Reading success is achieved when students are taught in a supportive environment that allows them to take risks, and at this time, guided reading has been successful in providing that needed instruction.

Class Liaison Parent Morning Tea
The role of the Class Liasion Parent (CLP) is a vital conduit between the classroom and the teachers. Through the year, CLPS are invited to share morning tea with the principal, deputies, curriculum leaders and specialist teachers to share current initiatives, successes and Business Plan focus areas.

The CLPs were asked to list two goals for their child, with results shown in the attached infographic. A big thank you to parents who have put their hand up to be a CLP for their class. The role of the Class Liaison Parent is an important one to develop informed communication and liaison between students, families, teachers and the school community. Click HERE to view the CLP Role statement

CLP communication to class parents will occur through COMPASS, which is the school’s main communication platform.  Any informal class lists and groups are not updated, moderated or endorsed by the teachers or the school.

Djeran - Noongar Six Seasons
Aboriginal seasons are guided by the land. Unlike the European calendar, there is no start or end date to each season. The passing of each one is something that is felt. The Noongar people ebb and flow with the changes of Western Australia’s environment, letting nature guide them. Plants and animals have a special purpose in the changing of each season.

Birak (December - January)
Bunuru (February - March)
Djeran (April - May)
Makuru (June - July)
Djilba (August - September)
Kambarang (October - November)

Djeran April - May (Season of Adulthood)
The season of Djeran is one of my favourite seasons with cooler days, rich sunsets and the presence of dew on the plants in the early mornings. Traditionally this was the time of year to nourish and prepare the body for the cold of Makuru. Fish is an important food source, along with seeds and bulbs. Banksia flowers are out in bloom giving a food source for the birds and insects that rely on them.

Stay safe

From the School Psychologist

National Reconciliation Week (NRW), from 27 May to 3 June, is an opportunity “…for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements…”, and to see how each of us can play a part in achieving reconciliation in our country.
The dates for NRW are the same every year as they are significant dates in our nation’s history: 27 May when the 1967 Referendum was successful, and 3 June when the Mabo High Court decision was made.

The theme for NRW this year is, Be a Voice for Generations, which encourages all Australians to play a part in promoting reconciliation at home, at school, in places of work, and in our communities.
To learn more, please visit Reconciliation Australia.

You can view a short videoclip, Narragunnawali, a resource for school communities at the following link Narragunnawali Reconciliation in Education.
"Narragunnawali (pronounced narra-gunna-wally) is a word from the language of the Ngunnawal people, Traditional Owners of the land on which Reconciliation Australia’s Canberra office is located. The word means alive, wellbeing, coming together and peace. We pay our respects and thank the United Ngunnawal Elders Council for giving us permission to use the word narragunnawali."

Curriculum

Pi Challenge
This is a bit late in coming, but March 14th was International Pi Day, and some of the students in U8 were keen to accept their teacher’s annual challenge. Anyone who managed to memorise and relate Pi to the 50th decimal place (either verbally or in written form) would be rewarded with a pie of their collective choice. This year, six students managed to rise to the challenge. We had Adia and Yuhuai who got to the 60th decimal place, and Tom, Aneesha, Ghazal and Eva who all got to the 50th place. Adia was the outright champ on a count back. She and Yuhuai got to wear the highly sought-after Pi shirt for a day. The Pi champs got together and decided they wanted a potato or Shepherd’s Pie. Adia, as the ultimate champ, stipulated that there had to be pastry on the bottom, as well as potato on the top. These math’s geniuses are known to be a bit fussy!

Fremantle HASS Migration Excursion
This Tuesday, our Year Six students travelled all the way to Fremantle for our HASS Migration Excursion. Each class had two guided activities in the Maritime Museum and a more casual walking tour of the Fremantle Port. We learned about the reasons people migrate, the challenges they faced, and the contributions they were able to make to their new society. The students got to role play various parts of the life of an Italian migrant named Giacomo, who was renamed Jim. We followed him through his childhood in Italy, his long ocean journey by boat, his jobs in the fishing and timber industries, his marriage, and the large family he and his wife raised. We even ended by blessing the fleet in a very fancy parade.
This excursion was both entertaining and educational. A special thank you to our volunteer parent helpers who attended on the day. These days just can’t happen without your continued support. Click HERE for photos.

The Play’s the Thing
On Tuesday 2 May, our Year Six students Travelled to Shenton College to attend a performance of Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book. The play included several ex-Subiaco Primary students, and was a very entertaining and enjoyable experience. We travelled by train, and it was valuable for our students to experience what next year’s commute might be like. Thank you to Shenton College for the invite, and congratulations to all the highly accomplished performers involved.

MakeCode Coding Club

The MakeCode club focuses on solidifying foundational coding concepts and skills in computational thinking through the approachable block-based coding framework.

The club supports the development of personal connections to computing by drawing upon students’ creativity and interests. More experienced children can also benefit from MakeCode as they can use MakeCode to code robotics and mod Minecraft.

It lays a solid foundation for students to learn advanced programming languages, such as Python and JavaScript. Students will learn computing concepts at their own pace through personally meaningful projects.

Students will be taught by friendly and professional coding instructors from Codekids Perth. They will learn these future-proof skills in a fun and educational environment.

Class time: 3:30pm – 4:30pm (every Friday for 4 weeks this term)
Location: Subiaco Primary School Library
Suitable for: Years 2 – 6
Prerequisites: Nil
Maximum number of students: 12

Class Liaison Parents
A huge thank you to Catie Parsons who has volunteered to be our new CLP Coordinator this year! We are still looking for volunteers to take on the Class Liaison Parent (CLP) role.
Ideally each class has 2 CLPs, however the following classes currently have no CLP:
Year 3 – L2, M1, M2
Year 4 – L1
Year 5 – U1

The CLP is a fulfilling role, providing a great opportunity to get involved in the community and meet people while:

  • Welcoming new families and supporting their transition into our school
  • Organising get togethers or social functions
  • Collating a voluntary and informal parent/guardian contact list
  • Organising an end of year gift for the teacher

If you might be interested, but would like to know more about the role, please contact Catie Parsons at catieparsons@yahoo.com
Many thanks to those parents who have already volunteered!

Reminders

Updating School Records
If your address, telephone number or email address has changed, please contact the school office.

Publications Permission
Upon enrolment, parents decide whether to give consent for their child’s name, photo or work to be published in school newsletters, school related activities, promotional material for the Department of Education and articles for the West Australian and community newspapers. This consent continues for your child while enrolled at our school. If at any stage you want to change the permission status, then you will need to notify the office in writing of this request.

Bread Bag Recycling Program
The school has signed up to participate in the Wonder Recycle Rewards program which encourages Aussie schools to recycle bread bags that might otherwise go to landfill in return for points which can be redeemed for new sports equipment.

We have curently filled nearly one box with another three to go before the program ends on Friday 7 July. If you would like to drop off bags the recycling box is located at the front entrance to the library.

Any bag that has contained bread of some sort is eligible. We just ask that the bags are free of crumbs to ensure no contamination during the recycling process, but they do not need to be washed.

More information can be found at https://wonder.com.au/wonder-recycling-rewards

Containers for Change
We will continue to collect eligible drink containers for the rest of the year and are offering bags to everyone who is not collecting for their family.

If you can help us with this easy fundraiser, please visit the library and collect a recycling bag which can be returned to us at any time.

Since the schemes commencement we have recycled over 28,000 containers and raised $2,800 for the school.

For more information on container eligibility please visit www.containersforchange.com.au/wa/container-eligibility
