IoT & Water Quality Systems Design

With the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT), sensor connectivity has never seemed so easy. However, there is a disconnect between buying and successfully installing an off-the-shelf system. This is never more evident than in water quality monitoring. For urban installations, the risk of vandalism only compounds the inherent risks associated with electronics and water!

ICT International collaborates with customers to produce infrastructure solutions to overcome these risks. By providing bespoke solutions to suit the installation site, ICT International can streamline ongoing sensor maintenance and provide long-term high-quality data sets.

For more information email Sam Fisher to discuss your needs.

Sam is an Environmental Scientist who has many years of experience in Hydrometry, especially around sensing and data logging/collection. Sam developed the solutions in the case studies highlighted here.

Urban Catchment Water Quality Monitoring

In late 2020 Camden Shire (Sydney, NSW) and ICT International installed a network of LoRaWAN based water quality monitoring stations.

Nitrate Runoff monitoring

The public nature of these sites required customised sensor and cable housings, as well as a custom node mounting solution.

IoT Systems for Real Time Nitrate Runoff Monitoring

ICT International sensing solutions are being used as part of the “Digital remote monitoring to improve horticulture’s environmental performance” project.

Nitrate Runoff monitoring

This included a customised IoT system for real-time nitrate runoff monitoring on an Innisfail (QLD) banana farm.

RBC Flume for runoff monitoring

For this project, RBC flumes were used to measure field runoff. Extremely accurate, RBC flumes are supplied with a free-flow discharge precision of ±5%. The inset stilling well houses a submersible pressure transducer and sample extracting inlet. The highly portable and stainless-steel RBC Flume is ideal for Watershed and Edge-of-Field Runoff monitoring projects.

Other Hydrological Monitoring Solutions

ICT International's modular range of Sensor-Node IoT Packages (SNiPs) enable accurate real-time measurements. For more details on the continuous hydrological monitoring options, see pages 70-81 of the IoT Catalogue.

The catalogue can be found here in English, along with versions in Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese.
