Welcome to the July newsletter

Dear

July has flown by and we loved our time celebrating with the Class of 2024 at the Leeds Playhouse. Many congratulations to all of our latest graduates and a very warm welcome to the alumni community. You can visit the Alumni Facebook page for images taken throughout graduation week.

We were also pleased to share the National Student Survey (NSS) 2024 results, which were published earlier this month and reflected feedback from this cohort. Read more.

Celebrating our latest Honorary Fellows

New Honorary Fellows

During graduation week Leeds Trinity also hosted a ceremony to award Honorary Fellowships to seven outstanding individuals, six of whom are alumni.

This year, the ceremony was held at Leeds Civic Hall, reflecting the University’s ambitions to forge stronger connections and increase our contribution in the city as we prepare to open our new Leeds City Campus at 1 Trevelyan Square.

Alumni recipients were Mark Dolby (Media with Management, 2004), John Goldthorp (Human Movement, 1984), Sharon Jandu OBE (Business Management and Public Media, 1991), Harpreet Kaur (BA Media, 2011 and MA Broadcast Journalism, 2012), James Mason (Broadcast Journalism, 2002) and Karen Pearson (Media with Management, 1999). They were joined by Rashik Parmar MBE. Read more.

Paralympics debut for Lottie

Congratulations to Lottie McGuinness (Sport and Exercise Sciences, 2023) who has been selected to compete for ParalympicsGB in Paris next month. Lottie will be making her Paralympics debut in Para Powerlifting.

We're sure you will be joining us in cheering Lottie on and you can keep your eye on the schedule here.

Euros nostalgia

July was a month when Euro 2024 provided a lot of entertainment and heartache for many of us (again). Those who were on campus during the summer of 1996 may also remember that Leeds Trinity was host to the French national team during that tournament.

England hosted the Euros that year and we were the chosen location for one of the best national teams in the world. See more images.

Angus does it again

As well as the Euros we had our own star-studded alumni football match on campus in July. We welcomed back alumni from the 90s for their annual reunion match. It was a great game as always with a brilliant atmosphere.

Thanks as always and congratulations to alumnus Angus Martin (Sport, Health and Leisure and Media, 1998) on another brilliant and well attended event (and thanks for letting the Alumni Officer join in!).

Featured alumni – Nikki Davis

In July we really enjoyed a visit from alumna Nikki Davis (PGCE Business and Economics, 2002) when she returned to campus for the first time since graduating.

Nikki is Principal & CEO at Leeds College of Building and we loved talking through the potential opportunities for collaboration between the two institutions.

We were excited to speak to Nikki about construction, particularly with the new courses in Construction and the Built Environment we are offering. She said: "I would definitely encourage [students] to do it. Construction is a varied, dynamic and broad sector with so many opportunities. If you want to study law, why not construction law? Or if you have digital skills, why not apply them in Building Information Modelling (BIM)?

"The future of construction is also heavily focused on sustainability, so for anyone interested in this area, the best place to do it would be in construction." Read Nikki's alumni profile.
