Eligibility: open to all graduate students with the EAS Division. Application period: December 6, 2024 - January 17, 2025. Please direct questions and comments to Yazmin Gonzalez, Director of EAS Programs for Student Success at yazminyg@caltech.edu. Apply here. Data to Discovery Visualization Program - Call for ProposalsThe Caltech/JPL/ArtCenter Data to Discovery Summer Data Visualization Program is seeking proposals for new projects for Summer 2025 (and potentially academic year 2025-26). In this 10-week program, visualization faculty at Caltech, JPL and Art Center College of Design work with talented design and computer science student interns in collaboration with Caltech and JPL research groups. The program aims to generate novel custom-built data visual representations, geared towards the creation of interactive tools for science and engineering research projects. If you have a project that would benefit from innovative visual analytics please complete the short proposal form by Monday December 30th, 2024. Everhart Lecture Series - Call for NominationsThis series is a forum to encourage interdisciplinary interaction in our community, to share ideas about recent research developments and issues, and to recognize the exemplary presentation and research ability of Caltech's graduate students. Selected speakers will be awarded $2,000 for presenting an hour-long lecture on their research. Their lecture will be recorded and posted to the Caltech YouTube channel and the speakers will be acknowledged at graduation. Eligibility: Graduate students who have passed their candidacy exams. Any faculty, students, or staff may nominate eligible graduate students using this form. Nominations are due by 11:59 PM PST, December 31, 2024. Reach out to Jedidiah Alindogan with any questions. New EAS Staff Announcement: Sylvia LeeHi everyone, I'm so grateful to be here and look forward to getting to know everyone! I'm local to the area and the last time I was on campus was when I volunteered for the Jazz Festival back in high school. I enjoy dabbling in art and design projects, love snowboarding, and am always eager to talk about the most random things. :) I'm excited to meet everyone and explore the campus! Spotlight On Our PeopleAdriana DacaPostdoctoral Scholar, Mechanical and Civil Engineering Hi! I’m Adriana, a postdoc in Mechanical & Civil Engineering working with Professor Andrade. I’m interested in understanding how granular materials behave in low-gravity environments, including the surfaces of the Moon, Mars, and small bodies like rubble-pile asteroids. My PhD at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada focused on how gravity shapes interactions between robotic systems and granular materials, centering on planetary rover wheel–soil interactions. Before joining Caltech in May 2024, I worked at JPL, contributing to projects ranging from mobility concepts for future rovers to robotic sampling and manipulation systems. Currently, I’m contributing to a Caltech-led mission that would rendezvous with rubble-pile asteroid Apophis during its close Earth approach in 2029 (it will come 10x closer than the Moon!) Through numerical simulations, I’m investigating Apophis’ granular mechanics and implications for planetary science and planetary defense. In my spare time, I enjoy rock climbing, hiking, and flying small aircraft. Mizuki OhnoPostdoctoral Scholar, Applied Physics and Materials Science I am a postdoctoral scholar in the Falson Lab. I received my PhD at the University of Tokyo in March 2024 and joined Caltech in April. My research focuses on the fabrication of “atomically controlled thin-film interfaces” by molecular beam epitaxy to clarify underlying technologies for designing and controlling quantum phenomena. I'm also dedicated to exploring novel materials using epitaxial stabilization techniques. Recently, I’ve concentrated on the La-Ag-Ge system, where hexagonal LaAgGe and tetragonal LaAg₂Ge₂ phases are stabilized under silver poor and rich conditions, respectively. Interestingly, at intermediate Ag/La ratios, a new tetragonal phase emerges. I plan to investigate the fundamental electronic properties of these phases at low temperatures. Outside of research, I enjoy training at the gym, hiking, watching MLB and NBA games, and exploring movies. We'd like to feature you!Calls for Nomination & Funding OpportunitiesCaltech’s Office of Foundation Relations maintains an online database and email subscription service of primarily non-federal funding opportunities as a resource for the Caltech community. Opportunities include calls for proposals released by private foundations, public charities, associations, corporations, internal Caltech opportunities and federal limited opportunities.
