Click here March 2021 A Message from the Dean of the School of CommunicationDear SoC Community, Amid the ongoing challenges brought upon by the pandemic, I have been reflecting upon the origins and founding mission of the School of Communication in the context of the unique times in which we live. I find that it is an inspiring reminder – despite all of the adjustments we must continue to make – that our shared commitment to education and to the betterment of ourselves and our world remains as strong as ever. And what I believe to be most important is that we do this together. So, I just want to thank you all for the continued love, support, and care that you bring to our community. We had a successful and engaging Parent Spring Summit in February. Our SoC Career Advisor, Nance Rosen, presented on all the possibilities our students can take advantage of for internships and career placement opportunities. The program is specifically designed to give parents the information most relevant to their student's stage in college. We provided insights to parents on their student's current experience and how to prepare for the future, whether that be campus life, the next class year, or life after graduation. Speaking of campus life, right now we are planning for a possible return to in-person instruction on Monday, March 29. Of course, this will depend on Orange County Health Care Agency approval, and if we can remain in the RED tier of Gov. Newsom’s 4-tiered system. For more information, see University Messages. For those students who plan on returning to campus for in-person instruction, you will need to follow the Return to Campus Process outlined on the CU Safely Back website for students returning to the Orange Campus, which now includes weekly COVID-19 testing and daily screenings. It is hard to believe that Spring Break – March 22nd thru 27th – is just around the corner! Spring Break can be a time to connect, reflect, and reenergize ourselves. I hope you will continue to be mindful of ways you can invest in yourself by engaging in acts of self-care and to continue to invest in your well-being the remainder of this semester with a daily calming activity or moment of reflection. We strongly recommend that students not travel during Spring Break. In case your plans call for travel, please be sure to self-quarantine for 10 days before returning to campus. Don’t forget to visit cusafelyback.chapman.edu for the latest updates and information about how we are working to help slow the spread of the virus. I wish you all good health, meaningful connections and relationships, and lots of learning and growth opportunities moving forward together. Sincerely, Lisa Sparks, Ph.D. Dean, School of Communication McGaw Endowed Professor in Behavioral Sciences Spring 2021 AdvisingProgram advising will be online this spring and conducted through Microsoft Teams. You can schedule an appointment with an advisor on Bookings or reach out to them via email if you need to schedule an appointment outside of their advising hours. Mr. Travis Bartosh | Doti Hall 201 Dr. Arleen Bejerano | Doti Hall 211 Dr. Andrea Weber | Doti Hall 203 Exploring Mental HealthDr. Sara LaBelle and Dr. Zac Johnson (California State University, Fullerton) explore the relationship of student-to-student confirmation and college students’ mental health and well-being in a new study published in Communication Quarterly. The authors surveyed 412 college students to examine how receiving messages of validation and support from their peers relates to college students’ self-reported indicators of mental health (i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress) and psychological well-being. Their findings report that through reducing students’ reported depression symptoms, student-to-student confirmation is related to positive psychological well-being. Dr. Sara LaBelle (School of Communication, Chapman University) and Dr. Zac Johnson (California State University, Fullerton) SoC's We Care CampaignA big thank you to all the students who worked hard to put this campaign together! Our Student Advisory Board (with the help of some of our incredible faculty volunteers) has put together a series of events to help the SoC Community “connect meaningfully” throughout the semester as we remain online. The events were chosen to enhance SoC students physical, social, spiritual, and intellectual well-being. The first event will be Yoga with Dr. Sophie Janicke - Bowles on Wednesday, 3/10 at 7 PM. Chapman RadioFrom March 2nd to March 6th, Chapman Radio participated in the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System annual conference, a national conference for college radio stations. While this conference is typically held annually in New York City, this year’s conference was held virtually. While we were saddened we were not able to meet fellow college radio broadcasters in person, the virtual format allowed the entire station to attend. The Intercollegiate Broadcasting System conference has been held for the last 81 years, and has sessions on programming, working on-air, promotion, audio engineering, working with record labels among many other things. The conference holds an award ceremony on the last day of the conference. Chapman Radio is proud to say we had three nominees up for these national awards. Karla Carmona was nominated for Best Foreign Language Show for her show Let’s Talk Música, Chayla Phelps was nominated for Best Radio Drama for her show Rough Roommates, and Chapman Radio was nominated as a station for Best Station Promo. We are proud to say we won the Best Station Promo award! That means the Chapman Radio production has been recognized among the best in the country!
