Kenya’s president-elect William Ruto, who campaigned on the platform of reducing the price of maize flour, is being sworn in today. Maize is the staple food item in Kenya but successive regimes have failed to devise ways of producing enough of it. Two failed crop seasons and constrained import markets have recently pushed maize flour prices to US$2.30 per 2kg packet, nearly half of the average daily income. Timothy Njagi Njeru examines what the new administration can do about it.
