A Message from the Acting Dean of the School of Communication

Dear Students of the School of Communication,

Happy New Semester! Spring brings change to the School of Communication. Dr. Lisa Sparks has taken a leave of absence from her role as Dean. At Provost Glenn Pfeiffer’s request, I am excited to serve you, my colleagues, and the community as Acting Dean of the School. As we begin the new semester, I want to remind you that our faculty, advising team, and the Dean’s office are here to ensure that the School of Communication experience makes a continued positive impact in your lives and career readiness.

This spring, I encourage you to set some goals and priorities for yourself. When I was in graduate school, I learned the value of planning ahead and strategizing—instead of always stressing and having to fix “emergencies” in my life. The more strategic I was, the fewer unexpected problems I encountered and the more successful I became in school. This process starts with an honest reflection and inventory of what’s working for you and what’s not—and identifying changes that would improve the results that you get.

For example, are your learning and study habits working for you? Most people arrive at college assuming that they know how to do both; when in reality, the strategies that worked for you in high school need to be refined for success in college. One of the best ways to refresh your approach to reading, preparing, studying, and engaging in your classes is to visit your instructors and ask for advice. Ask them what works for them—how they manage their time, how they organize a big writing project, and how they read new material for greater understanding (believe it or not, we are still learning every day). Give it a try!

What are just two habits you can strategically change or improve this semester to improve the results that you get?

I am grateful for this opportunity to serve our School. I wish you a great semester. If you need anything, please seek out the many resources we have to offer. Visit faculty during their office hours, even if things are going well! They want to get to know you better. Our star advising team, Assistant Dean for Advising and Student Life Dr. Andrea Weber, Dr. Arleen Bejerano, and Mr. Travis Bartosh continues to be here for you five days a week (see the website and the digital screens on the second floor of Doti for their schedules). If you haven’t yet met our new Career Advisor, contact Ms. Rosen at nrosen@chapman.edu for a personalized coaching appointment.

I am committed to seeing you flourish as a student in the School of Communication. If I can assist you on that journey, please contact me. Our students the heart of our mission, and you are very important to me.

Dr. Sara LaBelle named Assistant Dean of Academic Programming & Faculty Development

In this new role, Dr. LaBelle’s primary responsibility will be serving as Associate Director of the Graduate Teaching program. She will be taking on a greater role in the day-to-day administration of this program and mentoring of our Graduate Teaching Assistants. In addition, she will work closely with the Dean’s office, advising team, and Curriculum Committee on strategic planning for our academic programs, scheduling, and supporting overall academic administration of the School. Dr. LaBelle’s experience and scholarship positions her well for this role. Why we hate-creep on twitter

Dr. Megan Vendemia's research on the practice of "friending disliked others" on social media was quoted in the article "We Hate-Creep on Twitter Because It Feels Good to See Our Enemies Fail" published on Medium's tech publication OneZero.

Dr. Andrea Weber named Assistant Dean of Academic Advising and Student Life

Dr. Weber will continue to lead our program advising and student life initiatives. During her time at Chapman, she has made it a priority to provide the best student life experience for the School of Communication students through events like our School of Communication Experiences Day, Commuter and Transfer Student Mixer, and Alumni Panels. In this role, and as the faculty advisor for our Student Advisory Board, Dr. Weber will work to monitor student needs and collect feedback to implement and publicize resources, opportunities, and programming designed to enhance the student experience within the School of Communication further.
