Click here Sheridan Newsletter June 2024 Summer ProgramsSummer English Language Program for Incoming International Graduate Students August 5-16 (Application deadline: June 1) The Summer English Language Program (ELP) is a two-week pre-orientation that aims to equip incoming international graduate students for whom English is not a primary language with the necessary language and intercultural communicative skills to navigate their academic contexts with confidence and success. The 2024 program will be held in person (9:00 am-12:00 pm EDT) with optional afternoon activities and office hours, Monday-Friday, August 5-16. Master’s and Ph.D. students in any discipline who are beginning on-campus academic programs in Summer or Fall 2024 can use this Google Form to apply by 11:59 pm EDT, June 1. CIRTL: Moving Forward Together: The Interdependence of Instructor and Student Motivation June 11 Summer Dissertation and Thesis Retreat July 22-26 This week-long in-person writing retreat will provide dissertation and thesis writers with intentional structure and supportive community for productive writing. Brief information sessions will provide writers with strategies and resources for productive writing habits. A light breakfast, lunch, and coffee/tea will be served each day. The retreat is co-sponsored by the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning and the Graduate School. Please direct questions to graduate_writing@brown.edu. The TC Program is a semester-long learning community for graduate students and postdocs where participants develop skills in workshop facilitation, online teaching, and providing feedback. Please submit your application no later than June 20th, 2024.The Sheridan Teaching SeminarThe Fall 2024 Sheridan Teaching Seminar is now open for registration. In the Sheridan Teaching Seminar, participants engage in an interdisciplinary community of teachers at Brown with the goal of improving their skills as instructors and their students’ learning. For program dates and to register, see the Sheridan Teaching Seminar website. Individuals will be registered for the program as space allows. Junior Faculty Teaching FellowsApplications for the Junior Faculty Teaching Fellows Program are now open. We welcome Lecturers and Assistant Professors to join this learning community centered around evidence-based pedagogy in higher education. Last call for funding!Remote-Accessible Teaching (REM) Grants In collaboration with the Office of the Provost, the Sheridan Center is pleased to announce course development funds to support the development of REM courses in the undergraduate curriculum. A faculty member is eligible to receive a $2,000 research award to support this innovation. The application deadline is June 17, 2024, and all funds must be disbursed before June 30, 2024. Sign up for a Problem Solving Fellow (PSF) Teaching Consultation! PSFs are undergraduate students trained to give feedback on any and all elements of teaching or assisting in teaching a course. If you are looking to increase the effectiveness of your assignments, lecturing, or general teaching strategies, consider reaching out! Creating a Teaching Portfolio This online, self-paced Canvas workshop from the Sheridan Center guides participants through the process of writing a teaching statement and creating a teaching portfolio. There are three pathways (Developing an Online Course, Structuring an Online Course in Canvas, and Teaching an Online Course) that allow instructors to work through the sections at their own pace based on their own needs and interests.
