Sustainability at Broadmead
By Marsha Howes
Sustainability is defined as meeting current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. It is frequently linked to climate change, which can cause extreme weather, floods, and drought and alter the lifecycles of plants and animals. Climate change is a global phenomenon, one that people may feel helpless to impact. At the local level, however, an organization can make a difference by instituting sustainability policies.
Guided by the core value of being good stewards of Broadmead’s resources, the Board of Trustees approved the Broadmead Sustainability Policy on March 16, 2015. Broadmead’s charge is a commitment to protect its natural and built environment, to serve as a model of sustainability, to use and respect available resources, and to be mindful of the ways in which resources are used, with an eye to the long-term benefit of Broadmead and the world.

Collecting Honey from the Apiary

Story and photo by Willy Sydnor
Thanks to the hard work of the beekeeping team, Broadmead residents will have the opportunity to purchase a jar of liquid gold that has just been harvested using a new extractor.
The harvesting process involved considerable work. Team members collected 15 frames filled with honey from the seven hives and brought them to their work space, on temporary loan from the Woodshop. The beekeepers used heated knives to scrape the wax honeycombs from both sides of each frame, revealing the honey.
The frames were then loaded into the extractor. Centrifugal force spins the honey out of the frames. After five minutes of being spun, the frames were reversed and the process was repeated, which extracted as much honey as possible. Next, the honeycombs were set aside in strainers to get any of the honey still hidden in the combs.
The resident beekeepers include Cliff York, Michael Kelly, Ray Lund, Lynda Burton, Marsha Rosenberg, and Tom Boytim. The seventh beekeeper is Stan Dorman, who donated beekeeping equipment to Broadmead and enjoys working with the beekeepers.
