ARTS NEWSLETTER September - October

Central Otago Art Award judges Elizabeth Caldwell and Jim Geddes with Maxine Williams
Kia Ora,
I’d like to offer a big welcome to new readers this month’s issue of the Central Otago Arts Newsletter. You have found your way onto the Central Otago Arts contact list because you have voted in the Viewers’ Choice Award through the online gallery
. I thank you for taking the time to participate in the viewers’ choice, which will see one lucky person winning $1000. This will be announced on the evening of Tuesday 27th October at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery and the winner will be notified soon after. The results will also be published on our website. For those of you who haven’t voted, take the time to do so, either online or at the exhibition at Central Stories. The Art Awards exhibition continues until 26th October at Central Stories so hurry along and see it. For anyone who would like to see images of the Art Awards opening evening here is a link to our Facebook page.
It’s all about the Rugby World Cup throughout New Zealand right now and it will be interesting to read the statistics regarding visitor numbers to Central Otago. It is great to have the cup event finally underway, after a very intense build-up. However there are, believe it or not, other enticing events to enjoy aside from the rugby. One I’m going to see is the Alexandra Musical Society doing their version of the Full Monty. I imagine a few eyebrows will be raised, as the film version is quite raunchy but great fun.
Another of Central Otago’s premium events - The Contact Alexandra Blossom Festival - is on this weekend. This family-friendly event will see thousands heading along to Pioneer Park for a day out in the sunshine, enjoying the best of local food and wines, while perusing the market stalls and entertainment on offer. The Blossom Festival is such a lovely and time-honoured event, and through the tremendous support of our local community, it is the longest running festival in New Zealand.
Art also features prominently as part of the festival with the Central Otago Art Society’s annual exhibition showing at Alexandra Community Centre, in Skird St. Make sure you see this exhibition as it features a wide range of artworks, all of which are for sale.
The Queenstown Jazz Fest is set to rock the region for 5 days in October with one of the highlights being Fat Freddies Drop playing at the Queenstown Memorial Hall on October 21st. Have a look below to check out all there is on offer. Regards
Maxine Williams
