Banks Peninsula storm roading updatesHeavy rain forecast for Wednesday night We are contacting you ahead of the rain forecast for Christchurch and Banks Peninsula this evening and into the early hours of Thursday morning. Latest rainfall forecasts predict around 25-40mm for most parts of Banks Peninsula and 50-60mm for the northern and eastern parts of the Peninsula. This prediction is significantly lower than the 15-16 December rain event which saw around 250mm of rainfall in 48 hours. The key difference with this forecast is that 60mm could fall over six hours. Prediction suggests around 10-20mm per hour at times. Given the high intensity of rain fall there could be further slips and damage to already damaged roads, along with flash flooding of low areas within the bays. We have activated our wet weather plan. Council staff and contractors have been clearing grates, clearing culverts and opening outfalls along the coast where we can. With the majority of the rain predicted to fall over night we are encouraging residents to prepare for this weather event in the daylight, and stay off the roads when it gets dark. Fulton Hogan, City Care, Council staff and Civil Defence volunteers will be on standby Wednesday evening. Crews from our Transport and Three Waters teams will be out at some locations on Thursday morning to assess the condition infrastructure. We are asking residents to take care in the morning when going about your usual business. Please contact the call center if you have any concerns in your area. Please be reassured that we are well prepared for the forecasted rain. If you have any questions or concerns during the rain please contact our customer contact center on 03 941 8999 or 0800 800 169.
