Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton community update - 5 February 2021

Christchurch City Council

Greetings from your Community Board

Message from the Chair

Kia ora koutou,
Happy New Year to all and welcome to the first edition of our community board newsletter for 2021. On behalf of our Board, I hope you all had a great break with friends and whānau.
There's lots coming up this year, with consultation on the city's Draft 2021-31 Long Term Plan opening in March. The Council are also seeking feedback on parking in the central city, so check out the proposed Central City Parking Policy and have your say. Summer is still in full swing, with lots of events and activities around town. From community markets to music festivals, there's lots of opportunities to get out and connect with your community. And whether you're a cycling enthusiast or new to cycling, don't forget to sign up to the Aotearoa Bike Challenge - you can sign up as an individual or part of a group, so give it a go!
Stay together, look after one another.

Chair of the Community Board

Board Chair, Mike Mora

Highlights from our latest meeting

Our Community Board met on Tuesday 2 February. Some highlights of our meeting included hearing from local residents as part of our Public Forum. Russell Wills spoke to the board about traffic issues in Hornby, Ross Houliston spoked about a number of issues of concern to local residents and Marc Duff addressed the Board on behalf of the Greater Hornby Residents’ Association. We also heard from Bethany Howarth regarding stormwater drainage issues on her property in Quarry View subdivision Halswell. Templeton resident Mark Amer spoke to the board about issues at a nearby social housing complex and James Ensor, Eden Husband, and Roger Allen, members of the Naval Point Boat Safety Group, updated the board on the proposed redevelopment of Naval Point. If you'd like to speak to our board at an upcoming meeting, please contact the board advisor Faye Collins at Faye.Collins@ccc.govt.nz.
You can  read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here.

Explore Christchurch's newest wetland

Native flora and fauna are starting to flourish in a new wetland area in Halswell. The artificial wetland has been created at Quaifes Road in Halswell to capture and naturally filter stormwater before it flows into Te Waihora (Lake Ellesmere) via the Halswell River. It’s one of several new wetland areas that Christchurch City Council has constructed to manage stormwater and improve the quality of water flowing into our rivers. It is a great place to explore and we encourage people to visit and take a walk through the wetland. If you are bringing a dog with you, please keep it on a leash because we don’t want dogs disturbing the nesting birds or chicks.

Thank you for ‘bin good’

Thanks to everyone who had ‘bin good’ in 2020 – in December we were able to recycle 84 per cent of our truckloads. We need everyone to keep up the good work this year. Download our handy bin app to get reminders on your bin day or changes to our bin service. Challenge the family and have a go with our Bin Good game. A fun way to learn what items go into what bin.
