What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - June

Image by John Ecksmann Rangi Takō / Clear Skies, a short film featuring breathtaking astro timelapse footage of Te Waipounamu's night skies in New Zealand's South Island, will be presented at Alexandra's Memorial Theatre on Saturday, June 22. The event includes a live performance of an original soundtrack by Liz Conway, marking the launch of Winterstellar 2024. Winners of this year's Astrophotography Competition will be announced on the evening. While entry is complimentary, ticket reservation is necessary. Donations are welcomed to support the Winterstellar Charitable Trust's educational outreach efforts and help preserve Central Otago's night skies. You can get tickets at Central Stories Museum from June 10 until 3 pm on June 22. WoolOn is set to make its eagerly awaited comeback in Alexandra in 2024 and entries into these prestigious awards are open now! This year they are welcoming entries for the following categories: Streetwear, Avant-Garde, Special Occasion, Collections, Machine-Crafted, Toi Tu ki Uruuruwhenua, Hand-Crafted, Accessories, Sustainable Wool, and the Pink Wool Plaster Challenge, where designers are invited to craft an outfit using pink wool plasters provided by Wool Aid. This challenge presents a wonderful opportunity for children to engage, unleash their creativity, and design something unique to showcase on the catwalk—be it a car, an animal, or a dress—the possibilities are
endless! Woolon will be held across two days with the WoolOn Designers Reveal Matinee at 2 pm on August 31, followed by the WoolOn Gala Awards at 7 pm - both at the Alexandra Bowling Club. The gala will offer bubbles, canapés, entertainment, and high fashion, and the announcement of category and award winners. The WoolOn Community Expo is scheduled for Sunday, September 1, from 10 am to 3 pm and will be held at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery, with admission by donation. It promises a full day of crafting, learning, and shopping, with workshops, products, and displays of winning garments, complemented by judges'
insights. We received the exciting news that local artist, Marion Vialade's application to Creative New Zealand for professional development within her art practice was accepted. We are thrilled for Marion and hope this will
encourage other Central Otago-based artists to consider applying to these funds. Have a great June and enjoy everything on in the arts in Central Otago.
