Joe Biden has been trying to become president of the United States since 1988. Now, at 77, he will finally be the Democratic nominee to take on President Donald Trump in November. But who is he and what does he believe in?
As Bruce Wolpe writes, there has been a strong theme throughout Biden’s life, and that has been connecting with the heart of middle America. And this time, the job ahead of him is the same as when he ran on the same ticket as Barack Obama in 2008 and became vice president: ensuring America recovers from the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
So now, Biden must choose a running mate – almost certainly a woman – and go about trying to defeat the most relentless and shameless campaigner in modern American history. This time, Wolpe says, the election may well be an effective referendum on Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
If Biden succeeds, he will have an economy to rescue and a nation to heal.
