CHS: Inspiring girls to discover and pursue their personal exellence.

Crofton House has had a busy winter, with the 125th Celebration Event, the Winter Bazaar, and many more upcoming opportunities for alumnae to enjoy before we all settle in for the holidays.

125th Celebration Event

The 125th Celebration Event, held on November 24, 2023 at the Parq Vancouver, was an overwhelming success. It was amazing to have so many parents, teachers, alumnae and grandparents attending. The 610 guests, including alumnae from the class of 1947 to 2018, had an opportunity to mingle and learn something new about our School and its impressive history and traditions. There was a special CHS feeling in the room.

Thank you to everyone who participated and made it an evening to remember. Thank you also to all the volunteers who made the evening happen. A special thank you also goes to the 125th Celebration Committee members, to Elsa Li - our presenting sponsor - and our other event sponsors.

Photos of the evening are available online. Password: CHS125.

At the 6th Annual CHS Career Conference over 200 Grade 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with alumnae who generously shared their thoughts and expertise as students are considering their next steps and career paths.

As part of this event, we were fortunate to welcome 34 alumnae in various stages of their careers to the conference to present to students on the theme of “Curiosity”. We hope you’ll enjoy learning more about the event and the alumnae who shared their time with us.

We thank all those who volunteered for their time and passion! A particular thank you to our keynote speaker Elizabeth Raynaud-Thomas '89. Elizabeth captivated the Grade 11 and 12 students, illustrating how her curiosity led her into a diverse career spanning broadcasting, working at the International Chamber of Commerce, and leading initiatives in artificial intelligence and technology at the OECD.  Read interview.

Alumnae On Campus

As part of the Professional Speaker Series, Jessie Chen '12 spoke to the Senior School students about life in the gaming industry and what it is like working as a product growth analyst for META. Students were engaged and had lots of questions for Jessie about her various roles. Thank you, Jessie, for making time to be part of our Professional Speaker Series!

We were thrilled to welcome Sofie Roux '22 back to campus to share her story about BloomBox Design Labs with Junior and Senior School students. Through design-thinking innovation and hard work, Sofie has been able to connect thousands of students in Malawi, especially young women, to high-quality learning environments. Through the efforts of the STUDENTpreneur Club and student, Yasmin Kahkesh Sofie was able to return to the school and speak to students from Grades 6-12.

Crofton House recently hosted the Class of 1992 reunion for a well-attended event organized by Alex Brooks-Hill ‘92 and Quita Harmon ‘92. There were over 30 alumnae on campus including Head Girl, Sarah Morgan ‘92’, and Assistant Head Girl, Alda Tam ’92.

We are currently organizing reunions for the 2024 calendar year. If you graduated or were part of a class year ending in ‘4 or ‘9 you are encouraged to reach out to advancement@croftonhouse.ca for more details.

Alumnae Career Exchange

The Alumnae Career Exchange (ACE) had over 40 alumnae attend its second event in October. The evening provided opportunities for introductions in small group settings with cross-industry “speed networking” and industry-specific break-out groups. The response to the evening was overwhelmingly positive. In fact, a number of industry groups have independently initiated additional get-togethers to further support and build their relationships with one another.

Alumnae Jamming: Thank You

Summer turned to Fall and the result of three jamming sessions was over 300 jars and 4 different flavours. Thank you to all those who helped to organize, chop, stir and wrap. The time flew by and all the smiles made it so easy. After carefully packaging and displaying, alumnae volunteers succeeded in selling all the Strawberry Rhubarb, Spiced Apple, Blueberry jams and Red Pepper Wine jelly at the Winter Bazaar.

Stringing a Yarn Knitting Club

Calling all knitters! The Junior School is looking for alumnae to join their Stringing a Yarn knitting club in the New Year, running January 11 - March 7, Thursdays 3:30 – 4:30pm. Asking for a commitment of a minimum of two sessions. If you are interested please email alumrsvp@croftonhouse.ca.

Alumnae in the Community

Dr and Mrs. Munro (Ian and Cheryl) are delighted to announce the marriage of their son Dr Andrew James Munro to Catherine Sara Davies ‘81, in Victoria in September. Family and friends attended from New Zealand, Malaysia, UK, Netherlands, Spain, and from across Canada.

Congratulations to Vanessa Kahkesh '21, Junior at Berkeley's Haas Business School and Founder of STUDENTpreneurs, who recently interviewed Shaquille O'Neil about any advice he would give budding entrepreneurs.

We’ll be cheering on five Crofton House Alumnae who will be participating at the World Masters Field Hockey Continental Cup in Buenos Aires from December 6 - 14. Fran Sloan ‘75 and Nancy Moore ‘74 will be part of the 65+ roster, while Clare Ford ‘79, Alison Palmer ‘78 and Deborah Money ‘77 will be on the 60+ roster. Good luck to all the alumnae and their teammates at the tournament!

In Memoriam

Alumna Joan (Harstone) Wright ’45 passed peacefully on September 10, 2023 at Hollyburn House in West Vancouver. Joan married Peter Leckie in 1951, and had three children - son David (Jeannette) and grandchildren Brett (Carly), Sean (Morgan) and great-grandchildren Lila, Lui, Quin and Lennon, daughter Pamela with Queen Bee and Lollipop, and youngest son Philip. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.

It is with sadness that we announce that alumna Jill Wallinger ’49 passed away on October 13th. Jill was a boarder and second-generation alumna. Her mother, Dorothea Wallinger '12, attended Crofton House at the downtown location. Our deepest sympathy to the entire family: daughter, Jennifer Taylor, and her husband Peter Taylor, as well as their daughter Sarah Taylor '05. daughter Melissa Morgan and her husband Victor Morgan as well as their daughters Nicole Morgan '09 and Hannah Morgan '10.
