Welcome to the June newsletter

Collage of friend pictures

Dear

June has been a month of competitions where we have absolutely loved seeing your entries for our friends (a few of the entries are pictured above) and selfie entries. It says everything that one of the pictures shows matching Leeds Trinity tattoos as a memory! It aways makes us feel so proud that we have so many happy graduates, sharing your memories with us. This certainly leads us on nicely to our next step of welcoming our latest cohort of graduates, next month, with graduation ceremonies in July.

Many in the Leeds Trinity community are also celebrating Eid al-Adha this week. Find out more from Policing Lecturer, Dr Javid Bashir, in his blog. Eid Mubarak to everyone celebrating.

Meet our 2023 Honorary Fellows

Honorary fellows event 2022

Last year we were proud to host an Honorary Fellowship ceremony event on campus, where we were joined by new and returning Fellows. This included Olympic medal winner and alumna, Fiona May (pictured with previous alumni community recipients Kevin Hylton and Sylvia Myers).

This year, we are delighted that six of the new Honorary Fellows being awarded are Leeds Trinity alumni. Congratulations to Richie Anderson (TV and radio personality), Lauren Layfield (TV and radio personality), Ryan Needham (Yard Act), Rich Hayden (entrepreneur), Zee Faridi (philanthropist and entrepreneur) and Ian Harker (award-winning poet), who will be receiving their fellowships on Thursday 20 July.

Would you like to attend? Book your free place.

Remembering Matthew

Cricket picture

On Wednesday 12 July, a staff team will take on our alumni Lions Team in a T20 Cricket match in memory of former Leeds Trinity University Journalism student, Matthew Huggett, at Horsforth Hall Cricket Club from 6:00pm.

Matthew, from Essex, sadly passed away in December 2013 when he was just 21. He was diagnosed with Metastatic Ewing's sarcoma, a rare form of spinal cancer, which prevented him from completing his Sports Journalism degree. Find out more

The school with a farm

At the end of May we caught up with alumnus Sam Stones (PGCE Secondary Business Studies, 2015) who is Assistant Headteacher at Norton College.

Earlier this year the College reopened its school farm, providing an amazing extra-curricular offer for pupils. The space was made possible through student fundraising projects. From September there will be a BTEC animal care course as part of the curriculum. Read more.

A free author visit?

Author and alumna Jane Browne (MA Creative Writing, 2018) is giving away 100 free author visits to schools in Yorkshire.

As a former teacher, this is Jane's way of supporting schools and children. Jane is offering virtual visits for those outside Yorkshire. Request a visit.

Featured alumni – Victoria Smith

We were thrilled to recently hear from Victoria Smith, who shared her experiences about recently completing her MA despite experiencing adversity. Victoria graduated with an MA in Childhood and Education in 2022, following the aspirations she had from an early age to work with young children.

She actually co-owned a day nursery before undertaking other qualifications. As COVID-19 restrictions were coming to a close, Victoria signed up for a Masters Degree in Childhood and Education with us.

She says: "My MA really opened my eyes to the wider issues we face in the sector such as diversity, our understanding of the sociological impacts on young children and the varying range of pedagogy and approaches."

In April 2023 Victoria became Director of Operations for York Childcare. Read Victoria's alumni profile.
