Overcoming Imposter Feelings - Support for Researchers |
-
Do you sometimes feel you are not clever/qualified enough?
-
Constantly struggling with self-doubt?
-
Ever thought your success was down to luck rather than your ability?
-
Are you scared that one day your colleagues will find you out as a fraud?
If you are asking yourself these questions you might be grappling with Imposter Feelings. Take heart, you are not on your own and there are ways to thrive despite it!
Want to build confidence, maximise your potential and finally feel `good enough'? Join this interactive zoom workshop that will equip you with evidence-based knowledge about imposter feelings and some techniques to help you flourish.
In a confidential and supportive space, we will consider what it is actually, where it comes from and which groups of people are more likely to suffer from it.
The course includes:-
Webinar - Tuesday 6 December 2022 (9.30 am - 12.45 pm) followed by an offer of 1:2:1 (1 hour) confidential coaching session (not compulsory).

The Research Software Engineers (RSEs) Group |
The University’s centralised Research Software Engineers (RSEs) group assists our research community with complex and bespoke research software needs. The RSE group is part of the Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
The group consists of Research Software Engineers who help develop, maintain, and extend research software. The RSEs are software engineers with science backgrounds well placed to understand the constraints of academic research and associated software engineering.
The RSEs have dedicated every Wednesday between 11:00 – 13:00 for ECR and PGR enquiries. Depending on the complexity of your query, the team will either arrange a Wednesday Teams appointment with you, or will answer your query via email. To contact the team, email ResearchSoftwareEngineeringGroup@group.exeter.ac.uk outlining the support you need and the urgency of your request.
The RSE’s also host a Slack channel where you can ask questions and receive answers from a community of knowledge: https://idsai-rf-rse.slack.com/.

Share your Exeter ECR Experiences to Help us Support You |
Are you willing to help us to better understand the experiences of Early Career Researchers at the University of Exeter and identify ways of improving them? If you are, please complete this 20-minute survey: https://uqpsych.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/
SV_4HE9hZL7NHcC114.
Closes on 12 November 2022.
This interactive survey builds on the recent interviews conducted with University of Exeter ECRs (as part of a collaborative project with the University of Queensland in Australia). We found that the support people did or didn’t receive from different groups at work — whether local lab and research groups, teaching and administrative teams, or more informal friendship groups — influenced the experiences of ECRs in both positive and negative ways; impacting career progression, decisions about remaining in academia, and more generally, mental well-being.
Please share your experiences to help us support you.

Beyond the Brick Campus: Building a More Inclusive Academic Culture |
In the upcoming months we will be shining the spotlight on various RLI's (Researcher-led Initiatives) which took place back in Summer. The first one was organised by Kris Hill and was entitled ‘Beyond the Brick Campus: Building more Inclusive Academic Cultures’. This particular RLI was conceived to bring together PGRs and ECRs who
believe distance-based options are essential for inclusivity in academia. The goal was to create a network of peers with a shared interest in teaching and developing distance-based courses and exploring the best practices for accommodating remote mentees and colleagues. The initiative kicked off with a series of three workshops that featured keynote presentations, followed by question-and-answer sessions. The workshops included with round-table discussions where participants engaged in discussions on the future of higher education and the incorporation of distance-based options. A key aim of the initiative was to also allow participants to share their experiences and learn from each other, and to create a network of peers interested in developing distance-based courses or options, now or in their near futures. If you would like to be invited to the network, please contact Kris Hill
(kh458@exeter.ac.uk).

Action Notes from the last meeting held on Tuesday 11 October 2022, are now available - click here.
Next meeting for your diary:-
Thursday 26 January 2023 (10 am - 11.30 am).
All ECRs can attend an 'ECR Liaison Forum' (ECR LF). The LF's continue to develop and now act as a formal route for PGRs and ECRs within the ECR Networks to feed into University strategy. Dedicated ECR Reps feed ‘to and from’ the ECR Liaison Forums from several strategic boards, steering and working groups, including the Research and Impact Executive Committee (RIEC), the Exeter Academic Steering Group, the Concordat Steering Group, the Positive Working Group and the Equality and Diversity Board. If you'd like to come along, simply email researcherdevelopment@exeter.ac.uk askingto be added to the ECR LF
list and you will be invited to future meetings.

Doctoral Supervision Steering Group |
A review was conducted last year and presented to (what was) DCMG, and it was agreed that a steering group would be set up to support the ongoing planning and review of doctoral supervision, examiner and pastoral tutor training.
We are inviting PGR and ECR reps to join the steering group and provide important input and feedback on training. The group will meet monthly for six months from November/December this year, and termly thereafter. The commitment is expected to be reading a paper per meeting, and providing feedback in the meeting. If you are interested in being involved, please contact Kelly Preece (Academic Developer, Doctoral Supervision) on k.preece@exeter.ac.uk.
