In recent weeks, Tanzania’s opposition leaders have been the target of a government crackdown. Among them is Freeman Mbowe, the chairman of the country’s main opposition party, Chadema. Since taking over the party in 2004, Mbowe has built a political machinery that threatens the supremacy of the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi. Aikande Clement Kwayu traces Mbowe’s rising influence and the threat he represents.

There are few African countries where hip-hop is as big as in Senegal. For years it was even more popular than the country’s mbalax music. That’s because it took an American form and reimagined it, with local languages, styles and musical instruments. But what isn’t unique about Senegalese hip-hop is that the scene is dominated by men.
