It has been a hectic year for the economy. From the U.S. tariffs slapped on Canadian goods to the unexpected shutdown of Hudson’s Bay stores, there’s been no shortage of shocks to absorb in 2025. The Buy Canadian movement has brought about some optimism, but it has also exposed the vulnerability of Canada’s supply chains and retailers in a global economy that feels more unpredictable by the day.

At The Conversation Canada, we’ve met the moment by doing what we do best: working with academic experts to publish evidence-based stories that help readers make sense of it all. Our authors have broken down the financial impact of American tariffs on prescription drugs, maple syrup, grocery bills and Indigenous businesses; given advice to entrepreneurs; and explained everything from the cost-of-living crisis to escapist marketing to modern monetary theory.

We believe this unique kind of journalism should be available to everyone, which is why we don’t put our stories behind a paywall. To keep it that way, we rely on support from readers like you. Your donations allow us to keep doing this work free from corporate influence, and spread the word by allowing other media outlets to publish our articles at no cost.

The Buy Canadian movement reminds us there is strength in national unity, and we believe our independent Canadian journalism reinforces another shared value: to uphold democracy. Our mission is to provide thoughtful, fact-based reporting to everyone, not just those who can afford news subscriptions, so citizens can make informed decisions about issues that affect their lives.

If our work has helped you better understand the economic and business stories of the year, we hope you’ll consider making a one-time donation or becoming a monthly donor, if you’re able. We’re a registered charity, so your contribution is tax deductible.

For those who have already contributed to our summer donation campaign, please disregard this appeal. You have helped move the needle toward our goal of 1,000 donations, and we’re almost halfway there!

To each and every one of you, thank you for reading and for being a part of our community. We’re grateful to have you with us.
