Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is polling well among union members, an unusual feat for a right-wing politician. The NDP has historically been the party of the labour movement and has always promoted policies popular with the working class and unions. So what’s going on?
Today in The Conversation Canada, Chris Fairweather of McMaster University writes about how working-class Canadians appear to be particularly susceptible to far-right populist overtures — even though there’s a well-documented anti-worker and anti-union bias among right-wing populists.
But he points out that unions themselves may be playing a role in this trend, even as they try to confront it. He writes: “The labour movement has a long history of trading on nationalist sentiments to build broad support among their own members and in the wider community.”
