Banks Peninsula roading updatesCouncil contractors have repaired a significant amount of damage to the roads in Banks Peninsula following significant rainfall on 15 and 16 December 2021. Good weather has prevailed over the last few weeks, allowing contractors to make significant progress on the roads. Excluding Long Bay and Goughs Bay, the damaged roads are now open to the public and the original damage such as slips, scouring and road drop outs have been cleared or repaired. Our contractors are now turning their attention to the larger projects that will take longer to complete. This week’s newsletter focuses on the work undertaken on Goughs Road and Long Bay over the last week. Due to the length of time required for the remedial projects, moving forward we will send updates on a fortnightly basis. Progress being made on storm-damaged Goughs Bay RoadWith a clear plan and design now in place, work began last week on the realignment and repair of badly damaged Gough’s Bay Road in Banks Peninsula. The damage occurred after a significant rainfall event in December. “A priority for our contractors is to ensure the work is able to be completed safely” says Council Head of Transport Lynette Ellis. “There are two areas where water was found to be flowing through the hillside and under the main dropout. This has now been fixed with subsoil drains, allowing the water to exit the hillside without compromising the stability of the repair work. “The new alignment is now expected to take six to eight weeks to complete however this timeframe will be subject to the weather and general site difficulties as well as the potential impacts of COVID-19 on the workforce.” What work was undertaken this week? Subsoil drains were laid and crews started benching the side of the drop out to help stabilise it. Work started on the main part of the alignment started this week. What still needs to be completed? Another crew will begin working on the bottom section of Goughs Bay Road between Paua Bay and Goughs Road. Rock scaling was delayed last week and expected to be completed in the coming weeks. Timeframe for completion Realignment work is expected to take up to 8 weeks , not including delays due to weather, unpredictable ground conditions and Covid-19 isolation requirements What is the current state of the road? Gated, with resident and farm only access Goughs Bay Original damage Various full length slips, dropouts on the bottom half of the road, with full road dropout approximately halfway down. Long Bay Original damage Various small and large slips the full length from Fisherman's Bay Road, with a large dropout above Paua Bay Road and various slips. What work was undertaken this week? Crews completed a gabion repair at a large culvert. We have decided on an approach for the repairing the main slip on Long Bay Road What still needs to be completed? Need to review the engineer’s report on the impact of the river and side stream at the lower end of the road. Timeframe for completion Work to clear the main road drop out will begin in the coming weeks. This repair is likely to take two months to complete. What is the current state of the road? Gated, with resident and farm only access. Stay UpdatedDue to the complexity of the repairs required, particularly regarding Goughs Road, work will continue for some time.
