A Note from the ED

I've been thinking a lot about mindfulness lately.  I am a yoga teacher by trade (one of many trades), but have still been having a hard time being present.  However, during the Create-A-Thon Zoom events, I learned how mindful knitting, crocheting, quilting, and crafting can truly be.

To be honest, I'm not very crafty. I've tried SO hard! However, I never feel more present than when I am out in my garden and frankly, I haven't had enough time for that this year. Crafting, and gardening for that matter, as a mindfulness technique isn't new, as you can see in this 2016 New York Times article, but it also isn't something we should take for granted.

We should all strive to be totally and completely present when we are creating magic out of yarn, or in my case, out of soil.  Too often I am listening to a webinar or something work-related while I am gardening. I'm sure many of you can relate.  What if, together, we all switch off our devices, and be present and mindful. After a stressful summer fundraiser and a weird weather summer, I certainly am going to try to unplug and enjoy the garden.  Join me!

Gratefully-

Kelly

Consistency is Key

General Reminders

We are so grateful to you for all the amazing work you do and for sharing your talents with us and community organizations. As you create, please remember the following guidelines which allow us to quickly distribute requested items to those in need.

1.     Before beginning, check the website for sizes and materials for the items we accept. It can be difficult for us to share items that are not standard sizes or use standard materials. Our most requested items are hats, scarves, mittens, finger puppets, Peace Pals, and baby blankets.

2.  We love furry friends, but please make sure there is NO pet hair on any of your knitted items before sending them in. It can be challenging to remove pet hair on items we receive and we don’t want to expose individuals who might be allergic to pet dander.

3.  Please do not send store bought or used items as we are not able to distribute these. We encourage you to consider donating store bought or used items in your local community.

4.  We love to see photos of your creative or unusual items but please do check with us before sending them in as they are often quite challenging to distribute. Our community organizations have standard requests for hats, scarves, blankets, washcloths, bibs, Peace Pals, etc. They typically do not have an easy way to distribute other items.

Thank you!
~Jo

Item Requests:

Mittens

We are already receiving so many requests for cold weather items! Mittens are one of the items we consistently need as the requests far outnumber what we have to offer. Having warm hands in the winter can make a huge difference for a young student or for an unhoused adult. We understand they are very time-intensive to make so please know that we appreciate each and every pair we receive. You can visit our website for more information but the basics are below:

*We need all sizes, but the greatest current need is for those that fit elementary school aged children, ages 5-12.

*We need a variety of colors, suitable for all genders.

*Please tie each pair together with small piece of yarn

*Please do not send in store-bought mittens as we cannot send those out with our handmade items. We encourage you to find an organization in your area that has a need for store-bought items.

You can find patterns on our website https://knitting4peace.org/what-we-do/patterns. We are so grateful to you for all you do!
