What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - June.

Night sky photography by Andy Davey. The inaugural Winterstellar Exhibition launches in July with plans to develop the concept in coming years to create an annual event focusing on the Central Otago night skies and Matariki - the Maori New Year. This year it will begin with an exhibition of works by local artists, photographers and videographers who expertly capture the unique beauty of our Central Otago night skies. The exhibition will open at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery from the 6th
July. Also happening in July is GLOW - three evenings of delicious food, outdoor games, hot drinks, mulled wine, music and art - lit up at The Packing Shed Gallery and Cafe in Earnscleugh. Bringing more luminosity to the region is Light up Cromwell - an evening of live music, food, mulled wine, night markets and the Light up your Hat competition. The visually spectacular mass release of lanterns from the Big Fruit reserve offers some wonderful photo opportunities and makes for a memorable night for adults and children. Both events are a great excuse to wrap up and leave the house on these chilly winter evenings! We are excited to be bringing Top Art to Central Otago again this year. Top Art is an annual touring exhibition, featuring a selection of the NCEA Level 3 portfolios that achieved Excellence in Visual Art in the previous year. Five streams are covered: design, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Top Art provides an opportunity for secondary students and teachers to gain an understanding of what is required to achieve Excellence at Level 3. It also enables members of the public to see the high-quality art being created in schools. Organisers have announced that the Bannockburn Art
Festival ‘Across the Bridge’ will be held on the 6th-11th October this year. The festival, now in its 9th year, will focus on local talent but may bring additional New Zealand and possibly international artists to Central, depending on travel restrictions. Included in this year's event are two poetry competitions. Entries are now open for The Poetry Competition - themes and further information can be found below. Recently,
Central Otago and Queenstown community station, Radio Central, have been hosting a weekly arts hour where local artists and/ or artists connected to the area are interviewed on topics such as life, music and their art practise. If you would like to hear some of these previous interviews with people such as Grahame Sydney, Kate de Goldi and Brian Turner (to name a few) these sound clips can be found on the Radio Central facebook page, otherwise tune in every Saturday morning from 9 - 10am for some great listening. Enjoy what is left of June and everything on in the arts in Central Otago this month.
