Next week Nigeria will have a new president. Bola Ahmed Tinubu will take office on 29 May, and he has an enormous task ahead of him. Nigeria’s economy is weighed down by double digit inflation and debt. Still, Stephen Onyeiwu argues that the country’s debt level, if well-managed, shouldn’t prevent Tinubu from tackling poverty and achieving economic growth.
The fallout between South Africa and Washington over accusations that some ammunition was loaded onto a boat in Cape Town bound for Russia may, under normal circumstances, be dismissed as a storm in a teacup. But these are not normal times. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, combined with a more assertive China, is unsettling the world order as the dominance of western nations comes under increased attack and scrutiny. The South African arms-for-Russia debacle is playing out against this backdrop as South Africa seeks to assert its right to choose bedfellows, like Russia, even if Washington doesn’t like it. But, as Moses B. Khanyile warns, alienating western economic
powers potentially comes with a hefty price tag.
