Welcome to the LBP newsletter

Kia ora

Welcome to this edition of the Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) newsletter.

Our licensing system plays an important role in supporting safe, compliant building work and maintaining confidence in the sector. The articles in this issue focus on the professional responsibilities that sit alongside technical competence, particularly conduct, supervision, and getting the fundamentals right on site.

You’ll also find an update on the Building and Construction Sector (Strengthening Occupational Licensing Regimes) Amendment Bill. While no changes take effect yet, the Bill signals a continued focus on strengthening complaints, investigation and disciplinary processes, and on lifting standards of conduct and competence across licensing schemes.

This edition includes two Skills Maintenance articles that unpack practical expectations under the code of ethics, including how obligations apply regardless of contracting arrangements. We also share a reminder about the value of checking key work early - small checks can reduce rework, delays, and disputes later.

Finally, we’ve summarised recent Building Practitioners Board decisions and MBIE determinations to highlight lessons for everyday practice. If you use Building CodeHub, please consider completing the short survey. Your feedback helps improve the guidance and resources available to practitioners.

LBP feedback on use of Building CodeHub website

MBIE’s Building Performance is doing research to help improve the Building CodeHub website. LBPs are key users of this site.

Building CodeHub is an online search tool. It helps building practitioners find and access resources to design and construct buildings that comply with the Building Code.

Responding to this survey is voluntary, but we would really appreciate your feedback. Survey responses are anonymous, securely stored, and only used for the purpose of this website research. The survey should only take around 5 minutes.
