Seeing the Whole Picture: Celebrating Neurodiversity in Our Community
On Thursday, April 23, Crofton House School welcomed families to an evening of learning and reflection focused on neurodiversity, featuring Dr Rae Morris, Registered Clinical Social Worker, therapist, and researcher. The evening built on a journey that has been unfolding at Crofton House over the past several years. What began as a focus on awareness has grown into a shared language and a deeper, community-wide understanding that there is no one “right” way to think, learn, or experience the world.
As Rae shared, this work is increasingly being recognized across Canadian independent schools, with Crofton House emerging as a leader in developing a whole-school, neurodiversity-affirming approach—one that prioritizes collaboration, lived experience, and ongoing learning. At its core, the evening invited us to broaden how we understand our children—and ourselves. Read more.

On Tuesday, May 26, from 8:30 am to 9:30 am, join Senior School leadership in the Bains Family Amphitheatre for a Learning Together session discussing the student, teacher and parent roles in the shared responsibility for the ongoing development of core competencies. Honouring Red Dress Day

At last week’s Senior School assembly, we gathered to honour the 15th anniversary of Red Dress Day and reflect on the significance of this movement in raising awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People.
Students opened the assembly with an acknowledgement of our location on the traditional, unceded territory of the Musqueam people. The CHS Concert Choir, led by Ms Hartley, Teacher, Music, Senior School, performed. The assembly also featured Butterflies in Spirit, a Vancouver-based dance group whose mission is to raise awareness of this important issue across Canada and the Americas.
Emergency Preparedness Week: May 3-9, 2026
Across Canada, Emergency Preparedness Week highlights the importance of being prepared for emergencies. At school, we prepare for emergencies that require immediate and trained responses, such as evacuation, lockdown, hold and secure, and the “drop, cover, hold” earthquake response. In addition to regular drills, we rely on families to be prepared. Learn more about what you and your family can do in an emergency on the blog. |
Student Experience

In this issue's gallery, enjoy highlights from the Grade 4 Barkerville project, Term 3 Athletics across a variety of sports, delicious scenes in the Senior School's Rix Foods Lab, Junior School Spring Concerts, and more!
Soapstone Carving with Studiostone Creative

Students in Grades 1-4 have been working with Studiostone Creative to craft their very own soapstone carvings. Using a selection of hand tools, including diamond files, sandpaper, and toothbrushes, they fashioned beautiful figures of seals, orcas, wolves, bears, fish, butterflies, and shell pendants!
Recognizing Recent Senior School Drama Achievements

A huge congratulations to the 2025 Hadestown: Teen Edition cast and crew, who were nominated and placed in several categories at this year’s Canada Young Theatre Awards, including:

The Drama 10/11/12 class's performance of Trap by Stephen Gregg was also recently awarded Outstanding Psychological Thriller, and Harper, Grade 11, won Outstanding Acting in a Lead Role at BC DramaFest. This production previously won Outstanding Production at the Zone Festival in January.
Cantando Music Festival Congratulations!

From April 30 to May 3, 75 students in the Senior School Band and Choir competed with 80 school ensembles from across Canada in Whistler’s Cantando Music Festival. Congratulations to the 8-9 Concert Band, who earned a silver standing, the Concert Choir, who earned a gold standing, and the Senior Chamber Choir, who received both a gold standing and the adjudicator's choice for best overall choral performance of the festival!
Since 1999, the Canadian Cantando Music Festivals have inspired and supported the next generation of musicians from across Canada and the United States. In Whistler this year, ensembles participated in workshops with professional clinicians and university professors, socials, performances, mass ensembles, cultural tours, and team-building events.
Further Poetry in Voice Accomplishments

Among several incredible Senior School accomplishments in poetry—many of which were shared in the last edition of ECalls—would also like to celebrate Vanessa, Grade 12, and Harper, Grade 11.
- Vanessa was shortlisted by Poetry In Voice for their FutureVerse programme for her poem Things I Hope Are True About Adulting. FutureVerse is a national programme that recognizes and supports young writers by showcasing original student poetry and helping develop emerging poetic voices.
- Representing CHS, Harper recently advanced to the online qualifiers for the Quebec national finals and performed exceptionally well!

Packing for a Purpose: Thank You, School Community!

Thank you to everyone who made our Tools for School drive such a success! We continue to work with the Vancouver School Board and the YWCA’s Single Mothers’ Support Service to equip students with the tools they need, and with 450 backpacks packed and delivered in cars literally packed to the brim, your generosity made all the difference. It was inspiring to see such a mix of familiar faces and new helpers rally together at our “unbox, pick, and pack” day to help ensure that many more students in the Lower Mainland have the necessary supplies for a great start to the next school year. As one of the staff members at the YWCA shared, "We are so grateful for everything we received. It means more than you think.” Our deepest appreciation goes to our Event Chair, Angela Yung, for
all her hard work and coordination. And a special thank you to superstar parent Lisa Gunn, who made multiple backpack deliveries.
Service Together Spring Session with Backpack Buddies

On Tuesday, April 28, 30 Senior School students, parents, and staff members participated in the first-ever Service Together spring session with Backpack Buddies at their North Vancouver warehouse. Participants received a tour and safety briefing before getting to work packing bags of food for children and families in need across the province. The team even developed ways to streamline the process and improve productivity. By the end of the session, they had assembled more than 1,900 food bags. Well done to everyone involved!
A special thank you to our tireless event chairs, Yan Zhang and Carol Wang, for your successful coordination with this new venture. We look forward to continuing to support such an important organization through our time and service.
