We have celebrated many accomplishments this year, and they are still coming in even as we begin to close the door on 2020. Kudos to all for surviving and thriving despite what 2020 threw at us! We indeed faced many trials this year, yet our students, faculty, and staff impressively pressed on with continued flexibility, adaptability, hope, and resilience through the uncertainties every day. Thank you to everyone for your contributions! As we approach the holidays, I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful and peaceful season ahead. The holiday season is a time to reflect on our lives with a renewed sense of gratitude. I am grateful for the gifts you share with our School of Communication family. And whether this holiday season finds you close to home or across the globe, in snowy times or tropical climates, I hope you feel the warmth of my gratitude for the School of Communication and Chapman University community, near and far. During the holiday break, I challenge each of you to invest in yourself for 12 days of Self-Care after finals week. A brief but intentional focus on self-care can consciously improve our emotional, mental, and physical health. Think about how you can give yourself 12 Days of Self-Care with a calming activity and daily reminder to invest in your well-being during the holidays. I wish you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season and a happy new year filled with special memories. I look forward to our continued work together in 2021. Positive Media Psychologist Sees a Bright Side to the Connections We Make OnlineIt’s the little things that count, right? Would you believe that extends to social media? That torrent of YouTube music videos, goofy memes, lip-syncing TikToks and emoji-laden updates flooding your smartphone can inspire contentment and even foster awe, gratitude, and compassion. That is, when the content is uplifting. SoC's Alumni of the Year: Joanna Rosholm '06 Joanna Rosholm, ’06, B.A. in Communication Studies Joanna Rosholm has more than a decade of high-level experience in providing strategic communication and marketing skills to government, tech, non-profit, consumer product and entertainment/media industries. Serving for seven years at The White House, first for President Barack Obama as a spokesperson, and later as Michelle Obama’s Press Secretary and Deputy Communications Director, she skillfully built robust and adaptive strategic communication plans which gained national headlines and brought robust global attention and providing measurable results to the First Lady’s many initiatives, while adeptly building content partnerships and capitalizing on social media virality. We had two Chapman Radio alumni guest speakers this semester: the president of the Disney Music Group, Ken Bunt, and the executive producer and co-host of the Woody Show, Cameron Louis. We established a connection with one of the founding members of Chapman Radio in 1967, and were passed along a photo of Chapman Radio in the 80’s (seen above). We have also started a regular Chapman Radio alumni newsletter to keep them up-to-date with the happenings at our station. If you are, or know someone who is, Chapman Radio alumni and would like to receive this newsletter please contact Travis Bartosh, faculty advisor for Chapman Radio at facultyadvisor@chamanradio.live. As a frequent Tokyo visitor, Lisa contemplated whether studying abroad to a place she had been to before was "worth it." However, she recounts how she experienced new exciting things and was even able to land her first international internship. You can study abroad too!
