What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - June

Canvas Collective. What if a blank wall could become a canvas for the ideas, stories and creativity of Cromwell's young people? That's the vision behind Canvas Collective, a youth-led public art project started by Cromwell College student Caleb Lindsay as part of his William Pike Challenge passion project. Keen to give back to his community, Caleb brought together a group of friends to help make the idea a reality. He has been supported
by his mum Katie, Liana from Cromwell Youth Trust, and Maria from the Central Otago District Council. It is hoped that rangatahi will be able to share ideas, sketches and inspiration for the mural through a series of workshops with the project artist; their input will help shape the final design. The goal is to create an artwork that reflects the energy, imagination and identity of Cromwell's youth. The project has received strong support from Central Otago District Council and aligns with the district's Play Strategy, which encourages creativity, connection and community-led initiatives. A location is currently being confirmed, with the exterior wall of the Cromwell Swimming Pool building at Anderson Park under consideration. If approved, the mural will transform a plain wall into a colourful community landmark. It will create a welcoming feature and give young people a lasting presence in one of Cromwell's most popular recreation spaces. The team is now fundraising to help cover the costs of materials, artist support and installation. Every contribution will help bring the project to life. The Canvas Collective shows what can happen when young people are empowered to lead. Keep an eye out for updates as the project takes shape. Our New Website.
