The much-reported second stage of Russia’s invasion plan for Ukraine is now well underway and the Kremlin’s strategy is becoming clearer. Russian president, Vladimir Putin and his generals aim to occupy eastern and southern Ukraine, creating a “land bridge” across to Crimea and beyond to deprive Ukraine of access to the Black Sea.

The progress of this plan is being watched carefully by neighbouring Moldova. Like Ukraine and Georgia – which Russia invaded in 2008 – Moldova has a breakaway region, Transnistria, occupied by Russian troops. Stage two of Putin’s war could involve a dangerous degree of escalation.

Meanwhile, in France, incumbent president Emmanuel Macron has successfully beaten off a strong challenge from far-right candidate Marine Le Pen. Here are four key issues for his second term in the top job. Plus, pop star Liam Gallagher recently revealed he has arthritis and may require a hip replacement. But, at 49, isn’t he a bit young? Here’s why not.
