Wai Tūwhera o te Taiao e-pānui

September / Mahuru 2021

Nau mai haere mai ki te pānui tuawha mō te kaupapa Wai Tūwhera o te Taiao. Welcome to the fourth edition of our monthly newsletter for Wai Tūwhera o te Taiao – Open Waters Aotearoa.

We took a short break from our e-pānui in August while we planned (and thanks to lockdown, replanned) the upcoming hui, and now we're excited to share what's happening.

Stay tuned for an additional pānui coming out mid-October, featuring a story about Te Whenua Tōmuri Trust and our critter of the month.

Upcoming virtual and in-person wānanga

Now that many of you have collected your samples and received your results, we invite you to join us for some workshops/ wānanga. We hope you will find them interesting and useful in further exploring your data, and what it means to you and your waterway. We’d love to hear your stories and help you to share them in creative ways. These sessions would be run several times (online, and in some places kanohi ki te kanohi, in-person) to ensure as many participants as possible can attend.

Making eDNA data meaningful: virtual wānanga

Join us for a two hour online session, involving a deeper discussion with Wilderlab on how to interpret results; a tutorial on how to create a StoryMap; and a wheel of life (both effective ways to communicate your story/ findings).

Session times:
Monday 27 September, 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm
Wednesday 28 September, 6.00 pm – 8.00 pm
Tuesday 12 October, 10.00 am – 12.00 pm
Thursday 14 October, 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm

Share: regional hui

We value building place-based connections and are keen to hear your stories and feedback, so we are looking to organise a "share" hui for each regional group. These may happen either in-person, or online. The hui will cover the following topics:

  • Share your stories and results.
  • Workshop your next steps: what action do you want to take now?
  • Give us feedback on the programme: what’s working so far? What can be improved?

The plans for these are still being solidified. We have been working with coordinators in each region. See below for what we have in place so far.

Reminders

Sample returns

If you have not been able to take your sample and send it back yet, please let us know.

Making your data publicly available

Not sure why your data doesn’t show up on the map without your job number? The default setting when you submit a sample is to keep the data private – only those with the unique code can view them. You can make your data publicly available on the map by emailing us at eDNA@epa.govt.nz.

Lost property box

Have you sent a sample to Wilderlab but haven't received your results? Your sample may be in the lost property box! In some cases where the online form has not been received and matched to a sample, we have no contact email to send your results to. Get in touch with us at eDNA@epa.govt.nz if you think this could be you.
