The Business of Repair Dr Ruth Cherrington is the Project Lead and is working with the Manchester Metropolitan University and Finisterre. This project will collect rigorous data on business-led repair initiatives, identifying barriers and opportunities in the business-community-consumer interface. Ruth said: "Collaboration is at the heart of this project. Businesses bring the real-world challenges and opportunities, while research adds depth and rigour. Working together allows us to generate insights that are not just useful, but also inspiring to apply in the real world." Join the repair workshops to help shape this research. Details here Spores and Chores This collaboration with Newcastle and Northumbria Universities is led by Dr Shelley Kotze from the University of Plymouth and delves into the future of fashion, exploring how innovative biotic textiles — clothing infused with beneficial microbes — could revolutionise garment care and sustainability. Shelley explains: "By the end of the project we hope to have a greater understanding of how biotic textiles can realistically contribute to a sustainable fashion and textiles sector. Our findings will help industry and policymakers make evidence-based decisions about integrating these materials into more sustainable textile practices." More details here.
Data Visualisation Impact Working Group This project will address the challenges of data analysis and knowledge generation. UAL have partnered with The University of Leeds and Northumbria University. Tackling complex environmental challenges often requires collaboration across disciplines however this isn't always easy when scientific data are interpreted and communicated in different ways. Data visualisation can be a powerful tool that helps tackle this. The working group will focus on developing clear guidance and best practices for using visualisation to address some of the most pressing challenges in environmental research. More details here. Exeter's Scholar Talk Dr Ben Parker from the University of Exeter gave the talk "Microscopic particles with macroscopic impacts" to a number of college and sixth form students as part of the Exeter Scholars Biosciences programme. This gives prospective applicants a chance to visit the University of Exeter and learn more about the student experience and the research being done there. https://www.exeter.ac.uk/study/scholars/ Ben introduced microfibre and other textile-related pollution, their environmental impact and how the Future Fibres Network+ is working with industry and leading experts to embed environmental science into design. Ben highlighted two of his own projects; the first a review on the relative harmful impacts of microfibres in aquatic organisms and the second looking at how modifying textile fibres might mitigate their environmental impacts. The take-home messages stressed the importance of work between different disciplines (textile design, engineers, environmental science and psychology) and stakeholders (industry, academia, the public) to share knowledge and tackle these challenges within the industry.

Back to Baselines funds new research into non-fashion textile flows The UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT) has launched a new report on research carried out as part of a Back to Baselines Sustainable Fund project. Mapping non-fashion textile flows Advancing a circular textile economy in the UK reveals that non-fashion textiles represent an equally significant, and potentially larger, portion of the UK’s textile stream. It highlights the urgent need to shift the focus towards understanding this often-overlooked sector in order to build a truly circular ecosystem. Read the report here.
