What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - August.

Coming up in early September we will celebrate the opening of the Denis Kent Retrospective Exhibition - a collaborative project between the Central Otago Art Society, Central Otago District Arts Trust and Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery. Denis Kent is a Central Otago Landscape Artist who is internationally recognized, with paintings in collections all over the world. For 50 years he has lived and painted in Alexandra and Makarora producing a large body of work. This year he turns 80 and we felt this was a unique opportunity to hold a retrospective exhibition in his lifetime. We are bringing together 40-50 landscape paintings from private collections to exhibit at Central Stories. This exhibition will be a fascinating documentation of
people and place in Central Otago and the southern regions from the 1960’s until 2020 and a fitting tribute to his contribution to and achievement in the arts in Central Otago and the southern regions. The Central Otago District Council and the Arts Trust have brought the Chorus Cabinet Art Programme to Central Otago. Chorus offers artists the chance to use its cabinets as a public canvas to showcase your work to your local
community. You will be paid anywhere from $400 to $1500 for your painting depending on the size of the cabinet. We have chosen four cabinets in Cromwell, Alexandra, Ranfurly and Clyde which we would love local artists to beautify. We are now inviting artists (amateur or professional) to submit an original design to us which will be passed by a selection panel. If your design is approved, you will be required to paint it on one of the selected Chorus Cabinets. All finished art will be included on the Chorus website and will be considered for the 2021 Chorus Cabinet Art calendar, copies of which are sent around the world. The closing date for submitting designs is Monday, 31 August 2020. Throughout June and July, we worked with Central Otago local Andy Davey on coordinating the inaugural Winterstellar event. The introduction to this was an Astrophotography Exhibition which is currently on show at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery. Toward the end of this month, as part of Winterstellar 2020, Queenstown based photographer Simon Williams will be taking an Astrophotography Workshop. This workshop will be held over three hours and will be split
into three main parts. The first hour will be spent in the classroom getting familiar with camera settings and processes. Following this, the class will be taken outside where attendees will have the opportunity to put their new-found knowledge into practice. The final hour will be spent back in the classroom where new images will be processed, at first together, and then allowing you time to test it out yourself whilst help is at hand.
