ARTS NEWSLETTER - November

Central Otago Art Award Winners (from left): Art Excellence Award - Andi Regan, Central Otago
Artist Award - Megan Huffindine and Viewer's Choice Award - Jasmine Middlebrook.
Hi Everyone,
Well thank goodness for the All Blacks big win on Sunday. Sorry France, you put in a fine effort, but on the day, we came out on top. Now all the hype and excitement of the Rugby World Cup is over, it’s back to normal again, going to work, feeding the children and doing the dishes. Nothing really changes or does it? I believe the positivity of this win has been very good for us as a country. There is renewed national pride and a united spirit that that wasn’t so apparent before.
Now for some more really good news - Jasmine Middlebrook is the clear winner of the ‘Viewers Choice Award’. Jasmine is now $1000 better off, thanks to Alexandra Community Arts Council and all the voters. The use of the web to vote was a new experience for us all. Some artists campaigned online to win, which was great, and resulted in heaps of extra traffic to the website. Whereas physical votes from the actual exhibition drew another perspective. However, both platforms unanimously concluded Jasmines painting, ‘If You Don't Want to Know the Answer’ as the true viewer’s choice. With this exercise we have grown our email contact list threefold and visits to the website over the last few months have been phenomenal as well, with over 50,000 page views and lots of new readers signing up for the newsletter.
Another spectacular result from the Art Awards is the beautiful art calendar we have produced. It is for sale at various locations around the region so email me if you are interested in purchasing one. This calendar is our first fundraising venture and it will help us get the Central Otago art’s trail project underway. Also I have uploaded a video of the Art Award’s opening night onto Youtube. It has highlights of the evening which was beautifully filmed by Heather Smith of Clyde. Click here if you want to view it.
As you will see below, there are quite a few cool things on around the region over the next few weeks. The main event for November is ‘Thyme Festival’ which starts on November 12 and runs until the following Sunday. There’s plenty to see and all manner of activities to take part in, such as a drumming workshop or maybe you’d like to learn bone carving. I’m facilitating an artist’s talk evening on Saturday the 19th. I have rounded up eight very interesting presenters so far including Odelle Morshuis, Ro Bradshaw and Malcolm McPherson. Each get six-minutes to talk and present 20 images, which will give you an insight into why, how and what they do. It will be entertaining and enlightening. Please come along. All the information is on the Thyme Festival website,
click here. All the very best for the month.
Cheers Maxine
