Gipps Street Elevated Path

Community Update | June 2025

Welcome to the latest community update for the Gipps Street Elevated Path Project, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing accessibility and connectivity along the Main Yarra Trail.

Update on works

The Gipps Street elevated path project is reaching an exciting milestone with the stair sections installed this month. Balustrades and handrails are now being attached to the structure and some sections of the embankment have been planted.

Revegetation to take place in spring

Due to unseasonably dry weather, we have deferred some planting until spring when conditions are more favourable.

However, areas that are mulched or in a shady position, such as the south side of Collins Bridge, may be moist enough to plant in Winter.

Areas that are covered in jute matting or in full sun will require more rain for the soil to be moist enough for planting.

Matting secures the exposed banks and acts as a growing medium for native plants

Upgrading drainage

Installing the final part of the ramp has been delayed. We are now upgrading the existing drainage and stabilising the bank next to The Salvation Army. This additional work was not identified during the planning stage. The condition of assets and the geotechnical risks were not fully realised until construction.

We have started installing new pits and pipes. This is a complex job that requires additional planning, design approvals and building permits. It involves coordination with multiple authorities. This will ensure that existing assets are secure and works are undertaken safely.

Parks Victoria will deliver upgraded drainage and additional embankment stabilisation. However, this unanticipated work has impacted project delivery and construction is now scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.

Stairs were installed in June 2025 and drainage works continues

Next steps

We continue to work with the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation to ensure cultural heritage is respected and preserved throughout the project.

We appreciate your patience and support as we work to install this important community infrastructure, that will provide a much-improved connection for the many users of the trail.

Stay tuned for more updates and thank you for being a part of this exciting journey.
