Youth Arts Central Otago What's On - June & July

Mā te pohewa mā te auaha hoki, ka whakapuaki ngā kura e huna ana.
With imagination and creativity, hidden treasures can be revealed. Kia ora and welcome to our first bi-monthly youth arts newsletter sharing a wealth of diverse arts events accessible to you in our beautiful region (and slightly further afield) as well as online. We’re excited to launch new content on our youth pages to inspire, celebrate, inform and encourage you to participate in arts-based activities. Check out our website here. As Dame Robin White states in the quote above, we are all creative. We can all participate in the arts for fun, fuelling wellbeing, social connection, sharing stories, processing emotions, solving problems, self-expression, or relaxation. By subscribing to this newsletter, we do the research and you’ll be
kept-up-to date with all the events, workshops and competitions we can find. It’s that simple. Along with the newsletter, if you keep an eye on our youth arts events calendar you can be one of the first to book tickets to popular events coming through your town. We’d love to hear from you if you have any arts-related news, exciting projects, or pieces of work you’d like to share with the community. If you know of anything we’ve missed, or you’d like to see, drop us a line. We hope the events listed below add some sparkle, creativity and fun to this chilly season.
Winterstellar Art Challenge Winterstellar is creating an art challenge for a Central Stories night sky themed school holiday programme. This project encourages young people to reimagine traditional constellations, fostering creativity while building a deeper appreciation for our remarkable night skies. The challenge invites young participants to look beyond ancient constellation patterns and discover their own stories written in the stars. The
aim of this creative process is to spark curiosity about astronomy while inspiring original artistic expression. To guide and inspire participants, Winterstellar are inviting talented Central Otago artists to create their own interpretations of selected constellation patterns. These example works can be created in any artistic medium and interpreted however the artist chooses, while drawing from the same stellar inspiration. For the first challenge, Winterstellar have chosen Scorpius, a striking constellation that dominates our southern winter skies. This zodiac constellation sits prominently in the Southern hemisphere, positioned near the galactic centre between Libra and Sagittarius. Scorpius is one of the 48 constellations catalogued by Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the second century, though its recognition goes back much further, with records from ancient Babylon. In Māori astronomy, these same stars form part of the great asterism Te Waka O Tamarereti. We'll be sharing regular updates about participating
artists, how the school holiday programme develops, and the creative magic that emerges when young minds reimagine our celestial heritage. Who knows? We might just inspire the next generation of astronomers, artists, or simply people who never forget to look up and wonder. More information about this exciting project will be relesed in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on our youth arts calendar or Facebook page.
