Naval Point – Te Nukutai o Tapoa Development Update

Magazine Bay Jetty work to begin

Work to refurbish a jetty at Lyttelton’s Magazine Bay – and add a new swimming platform – is set to start on 18 May.

The marina at Magazine Bay was removed in late 2023 due to its poor condition. The small section that remains in place will now be refurbished and extended to include a swimming platform.

Work will take around five months to complete. Contractors will remove the pre-cast concrete deck and remediate the existing structural elements before putting in new walkways, extending the decking and adding the new swimming platform.

Lyttelton Port Company (LPC) has kindly donated some hardwood piles previously part of their inner harbour jetties for this project. This has all been milled and dressed, ready for use.

LPC’s donated timber has also been used in two other recently completed Council projects in the area: the new play space at Naval Point and changing pavilion at the Lyttelton Recreation Ground.

During the work, access may be limited to the Naval Point boatramp. Please follow instructions from the contractors on site and the Naval Point Club.

Naval Point redevelopment update

Naval Point - western development
Planning for the next phase of the Naval Point - Te Nukutai o Tapoa redevelopment continues. This will focus on upgrading the marine and waterside facilities in the western area of the site. Work will include revamping the public ramp and hand launch ramp. Consenting works are underway and will continue into 2026. A hearing to be scheduled once this process is complete.

Shared facilities
Alongside the Council’s work, Whakaraupō Recreation Inc (WRI) are developing plans for shared facilities, storage and space for 18 different sport and recreation clubs based at Naval Point.
